We've been pushing hard to get our road toll under last years. Come October, we were 30 over compared to the same time in 2009. We've now dragged it back to level pegging.
Operation Aeigis IX nabs 6700 speeding, 705 drink-driving | Herald Sun
THOUSANDS have been busted speeding in a Victorian holiday blitz with several hundred caught drink-driving as the holiday road toll hits 13.
Despite the grim reminder to drive safely, police say they are alarmed at those still flouting road rules.
In two weeks of Operation Aegis across the state, police have nabbed an estimated 6700 people for speeding.
Across the state, another 705 were caught drink-driving, while 1153 were found without seat belts and 1959 were penalised for using mobile phones.
They were among 21,330 traffic offences reported across Victoria, which included policing pulling over 372 disqualified drivers, 772 unlicensed drivers and 1001 motorists disobeying traffic signs and signals.
Supt Neville Taylor said police had conducted almost 319,000 breath tests and 1263 drug tests in the state’s biggest ever Christmas holiday blitz.
“Speed remains one of the top three killers on our roads but it’s still alarming to see such a large number of drivers ignoring the risk, ignoring the road signs, and putting themselves and others in danger.
He said this period was the :most critical time on our roads”, with 57 deaths on average in December.
“Don’t be a statistic and slow down.”
