Lieutenant Study Guide

Been a while since I been on here but glad to see many of the same members still active.

I am looking for some recommendations on books or links to a study guide for Lieutenant tests. the test is probably going to be around September. So I'm looking to start studying now. So any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Be safe.

Saw this in a test breakdown for a department. A third of the questions were on the book below. Half the questions were dept policy and procedure. The remaining were on labor agreements between Sgts/officers and the government agency. I haven't read the following book but it was on the list.

In NJ, teh state test is based of a "book list" you have to study from. WA do the same?

My department gives you a list of books to read when you sign up for the test. If there is a union, you can start studying the contracts of both sworn and non sworn personnel. Here, they also have the American Disabilities Act on the list to study also. I would recommend talking to some of the lieutenants on your department, preferably the newer ones about what they were told to study. I wouldn't go out and buy any non departmental material until you get the list as they probably change that from time to time.

We got the announcement the other day. The test is through IMPA-HR. If anyone is familiar with their tests, any words of advice? That would be a huge help. Thanks.

I had to write an essay, take a command officer oral board, civilian oral board and executive interview.

I would suggest you follow the advise provided regarding speaking with command staff within your agency asking if they would take a few minutes to point you in the right direction. Go about it in a way in which you don't present yourself as trying to "cheat" or anything. Go at it in a way that will stroke their ego a little by asking for any wisdom they may be able to provide that will assist your in your endeavor of career development.

If the entire promotion is going to be based on a purchased professional civil service type test, I really can't provide any reasonable advise.

If there is going to be an interview process, however, I would strongly suggest you become as familiar as you can with the Command Intent of your executive leadership so you can be competent if they ask you where you see the organization going in the near term to five years out. Progressive vision, management by objectives, etc., is huge at that level.

There are some other ideas I can provide you if there is going to be an executive interview process or command officer oral board.

I just went through the process Jan 2010 and got promoted in Dec so the testing part is still fairly fresh in my mind.

For the last 8 months I have been involved in a crash course OJT learning curve on the different world of command. Once you understand the "unwritten rules of conduct" and philosophy at that level, it makes the testing process easier.
