As pathetic as not necessarily being able to shoot an intruder inside of your own home. Intruders are an obvious threat whether you see them with a weapon or not - yet some states have the nerve to put just as much priority on their life as yours.
My wife and I applied for our NJ Firearms ID card a few weeks ago. We each did the aplpication and listed two references. I also gave a "good guy" letter from the agency head and local boss, both on agency letter head, stating I am a good LEO with no discipline issues, carry a gun as part of work and have nothing that would DQ me from getting such.
A week later, we each get a letter at the house stating the other had applied for a pistol permit and asking if we had objections. Then a week later our employers both got a letter stating we applied for such, and asked how we were as employees, performance issues, etc... My boss signs and writes "see attached" placing a copy of the previos letter given. My wifes company sends a letter stating they do not give out emplyee info without a valid waiver, and none was provided by the police with the form; and in addition, the Firearms ID card is a personal choice which has no bearing on my wifes employment and they do not care one way or another and will not involve themself in a "Constitutional Issue."
It has been 42 days......no response yet. By the way......the law says they have 30 days to get it to you.

What agency is in charge of NJ firearms cards? They must be real expensive for all the effort they put into it. Your experience would be a good thing to bundle up and send to the governor as money saving idea. I hope they don't ever realize cars are dangerous objects too. I suspect the DMV isn't much more efficient than this agency though.
P.S. It would be funny, but probably not professional or allowed, to go down to that office with your LEO badge and firearm fully exposed (and a press camera if you could find a sympathetic one) and walk in loudly with "I applied 45 days ago for a Firearms ID card, I am also a federal LEO and am authorized to carry a firearm 24/7 and anywhere I may need it, and still you cannot verify that I should have one in the time proscribed. I could verify each and every one of you over this radio in two minutes. Why is this a problem? "
It all starts with the application and initial work with your local agency, who then sends it to the state police.
WHen I went to get the applications for us, I was already there for a training day, and in full tac gear. They knew (I didn't) something was bad when they said "Sorry what you have to do to get this." I should have known.P.S.
