So glad to be in a Western democracy - Soldiers open fire on women in Ivory Coast

SOLDIERS backing Ivory Coast's defiant leader mowed down women protesting his refusal to leave power in a hail of gunfire yesterday, killing at least six and shocking a nation where women's marches have historically been used as a last resort against an unrestrained army.

Because the president's security force has shown almost no reserve in opening fire on unarmed civilians, the women decided this week to organise the march in the nation's commercial capital, assuming soldiers would be too ashamed to open fire.

How wrong were they?!?! It makes you appreciate living in a democracy, even if you don't like who's leading the Govt.

I think we are going to start seeing a change in certain countries with oppresive governments. I think people around the world are fed up with this.

Like the people marching against the Governor in WI. We take these rights for granted in the US sometimes. In many countries around world not only would you be killed but your family also.

Likewise, many citizens that migrate from these regimes into western nations take it for granted that the use of violence is a legitimate course of action to forward ideas and goals. Hence the need for scrutiny and access control.
