No. Don't blame an inanimate object for misuse. Blame the idiot father for leaving a loaded weapon where child could get it.

Saying you hate guns for incidents like this is like saying you hate cars because they cause drunk driving accidents.

This is true.... so do you think DCF should take the kids away?? I agree why would you have a LOADED gun off safety where a kid could have access to it??

Over a single incident with no other issues? Probably shouldn't lose his kids. Think of it this way: if the kid had found matches or a lighter and burned the house down after playing with them in his bedroom, should they lose their kids just over that?

I would want to see the totality. If the gun was just one of many problems and it was the culmination of those that led to the shooting, then yes take them. Same for the lighter. Lighter found because mom is a crack addict is a different story than kid that steals cigarrete smokers lighter.

I agree with you Mike so it makes me believe that they found other things in the house. but.I think it was a VERY careless mistake.

I didn't read where they took his kids. The severity of the injury as well as the negligence (and the fact it was a gun) is going to mean he will probably be charged with a crime regardless of whether they take his kids.

I'm just curious if you hate kitchen knives, car jacks, baseball bats, cars, ropes, hammers, ice picks etc. ad nauseum.

I hate sharpened hatchets. When I went camping as a 7 year old, I asked to carry it. I think I had been eyeing it since he sharpened it a few days before the trip. Dad said it was very sharp and not to play with it and be very careful when walking about the 10 feet from the car to tent area. I of course agreed to be careful and then proceeded to walk while swinging it. The corner of the hatchet caught the inside of my knee. Still have the scar.

Ok smarty pants you got me
Guns just scare me and I know they have to be respected and not just thrown down but that still does'nt change my fear of them they give me anxiety...I think b/c when I was in grade school a good friend of mine mom was killed by a gun while cleaning out the closet, one careless mistake and you are shot..I guess same with a car though so you are right but they still scare me.

investigation is still pending if DCF steps in and takes the kids, I don't think it mentions it in that article but it does in another article.

A gun doesn't do a thing without someone manipulating it. It's just like a car. It's a piece of metal and plastic (nowadays) that, barring a catastrophic mechanical failure, will stay in the same condition it was left in. I can put a gun on a table, and if nobody touches it, it will most likely still be there when every one of us is dead. Same as a car. I can park a car in my driveway and, barring a catastrophic brake and transmission failure, it will still be sitting there long after Im dead.

And if you don't like guns, you're on the wrong website.

Just my 2 cents... I'm a firm believer that if someone is going to have a gun in the house it's that person's responsibility to make sure that the gun is kept locked up/out of the reach of children. While it would be a shame to have the kids taken away over an 'accident' I could understand if it happened because it sounds like the father was careless and if he were to be that careless with firearms again his other children could end up getting hurt - or worse, dead.

Theres carelessness , recklessness and negligence. All have a different standard/ threshold. Each is deserving of certain sanctions and or punishments but in each case ALL the merits of the situation must be applied before passing final judgment.
