    Conservatives in Iran...

Seems like conservatives in the uS and Iran are kind of the same in some ways....

TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- After disqualifying thousands of reformist candidates, Iran's Guardian Council will reconsider several candidates given approval to run for office by Iran's intelligence ministry, a government spokesman said.

The disqualifications sparked the latest political impasse between Iran's reformists, supported by President Mohammed Khatami, and hardliners backed by spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Khamenei intervened and ordered a review of the candidates in an effort to solve the political stalemate, according to the government.

As part of a compromise with hardliners, Khatami had Iran's intelligence ministry review the disqualified candidates to determine who should be allowed to run for office.

"The government still hopes that the general elections will be held as scheduled on February 20," government spokesman Abdullah Ramazanzadeh said shortly after Khatami met with his Cabinet Wednesday.

The intelligence ministry will present its list to the Guardian Council, although it is not clear if the hardline panel will accept the proposed candidates. The council will meet Thursday night, a government spokesman said.

Reformist leaders met Tuesday with Khatami and urged him to postpone the election, saying the disqualifications made a fair vote unlikely.

Khamenei, speaking to his supporters Wednesday, said elections "must be held as scheduled, not a day later."

Lawmakers have staged a sit-in at Tehran's parliament building for the past 25 days to protest the disqualification of reformist candidates by the Guardian Council, a panel dominated by the Islamic republic's conservative clergy.

Lawmakers argue that even if the disqualified candidates were reinstated immediately, they would not have enough time to campaign. Members of parliament also asked Khatami not to bow to pressure to hold elections in these circumstances.

The political crisis, the worst in many years, was set to deepen Wednesday, when Tehran University students planned to hold a rally in support of the protesting lawmakers. There are reports that Iran's Interior Ministry, which issues permits for holding public rallies, has refused to allow the protest to go ahead.

Protesting lawmakers have called on the students to voice their grievances only through legal channels.

The reformist Islamic Iran Participation Front, led by Khatami's brother, Mohammad Reza Khatami, announced Monday it would withdraw from the elections. Many members of that party were among 125 members of parliament who submitted their resignations Sunday to protest the disqualifications.

Maybe conservatives here in the US are not as radical as in Iran but the similarities are very scary, in my opinion....

Oh, Ok...... I thought liberals were to be run out and, well, you know, sent away by conservatives.....
Seems like in Iran there is zero tolerance for liberals, sounded a bit familier (sp) to me..

I think you need to loosen up...I thought you Californians were supposed to be all laid back and mellow? Why the personal attacks right out of the gate?

What me figuring you were smart enough to reply like that on purpose, to 'shrug' off the above comment was misplaced?

ug let me rephrase; the above even confused me.

I figured by replying the way you did to the original comment, you were doing it on purpose to 'shrug it off' (and try to do it humorously, ala my comment) . I figured you were smart enough to realize what you posted in reply and replied that way on purpose. If you didn't, well that just confirms what the original comment has suggested.

I apologize if I disturbed your thread Zendik (doesn't that have something to do with a pot farm?). As an Arab, I find DC's commentaries blatantly offensive. I hope he is not this way on duty. With the OPD, if he pulled this, he would be spending a month on the beach.

They're the ones who don't hijack our airliners and fly them into our skyscrapers because they blindly hate our country for no real reason other than we're not like them. <-----ok I can safely say that is a blind assumption.

You are quite the condescending fellow DC. Yes, there are a few Christian Arabs. In the Middle East, it is probably in the neighborhood of 5% at the most. Do you know that there are a few Jewish Arabs as well? Did you also know that Iranians (also known as Persians) are not Arabs?

A fundamentalist Muslim (I am an Arab Muslim, however I look southern Italian) is much like a fundamentalist Christian or a Hasidic Jew. They practice their religion in strict adherence to the Koran. While a few have hijacked planes, the actual numbers involved in unprovoked attacks on the west run only into the hundreds. (Out of over a billion Muslims). This is probably the same percentage of extremists in the Christian and Jewish religions that have conducted terrorist acts.

I was serious about getting out DC. I have read some of your postings and I find them somewhat nonsensical. I truly believe you are an educated man with a warped perception of the world around you.

You have a good thread. What is your opinion of what is happening in Iran? Iran has been a fundamentalist country for a lot of reasons. It is not as simple as the Ayatollah coming back to power. Some of it has to do with the US and British influence on the entire region prior to the 1980's. They left a bad taste in the minds of a lot of the population.

If you think the Iraq was a threat to our national security, then times that by 10 and you have Iran. The tyrant Saddam was not a fundamentalist. Saddam didn't even really practice his faith except for show. I can go on and on if you are interested, but I would probably put you to sleep.
