Judge blocks Arizona law

A federal judge on Wednesday blocked some of the toughest provisions in the Arizona immigration law, putting on hold the state's attempt to have local police enforce federal immigration policy.

Though the rest of the law is still set to go into effect Thursday, the partial injunction on SB 1070 means Arizona, for the time being, will not be able to require police officers to determine the immigration status of anyone they stop or arrest.

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton also struck down the section of law that makes it a crime for someone not to carry immigration registration papers and the provision that makes it a crime for an illegal immigrant to seek or perform work.

In all, Bolton struck down four sections of the law, the ones that opponents called the most controversial. Bolton said she was putting those sections on hold until the courts resolve the issues.

The ruling said the Obama administration, which sought the injunction, is likely to "succeed on the merits" in showing the above provisions are preempted by federal law.

I'm really at a loss for words. Can not one state enact some ****ing laws to protect itself and benefit the nation without some liberal hack tossing it out the window? Who the hell do these people think they are?

I hope Arizona says "Up yours" and just does it anyway. This makes me sick.

I'm not really any expert on Federal procedure but am I missing something here?

The request for injunction is not a formal request to have the law thrown out, which is what the law suit is for. The injuction request is basically Obama asking a judge to tell the state not to carry out the law until the law suit is settled.

What gets me about the law is that they are arguing that since it's already a federal law that you can't seek employment as an illegal immigrant, it's considered "handled" in a sense.

wtf, there are federal laws covering nearly everything a state law covers, from homicide on down the line. So I guess by their same logic, we shouldn't enforce other state laws that are covered by federal law. Guess I should go take a vacation then.

I have no way of knowing how any protests will go now that the criminals got their way, at least on a portion of the law. Those supporting SB1070 have not indicated or previously displayed any civil disobedience, so I would not expect any problems out of them. In any event, I would expect more problems in the Phoenix metro area than in our jurisdiction, but if they come, we will deal with them.

We have a very well trained and equipped Mobile Field Force who has experience with the Hell’s Angels Prison Run and the strikes in the copper mines. These punks bused in from California will be easy to deal with.

Well I'm glad we have Arizona's, no America's finest, at the ready for us, Chief, lol I know you're close to it, but as someone far away in DC who monitors the heartbeat of things by the tempo in the press, it feels like it's going to get even more "interesting."

I didn't hear those in the news so glad you sent....those are FANTASTIC.....I didn't know he had it in him to flip the finger at artists on the left.....so funny, lol. Heck, I may have to run out this evening and buy some Elton CDs just for the hell of it. I always have a lot of energy for some reason. With caffeine, I ping off the walls But back to the topic of the thread....I guess I'm still really confused about how the judge can strike down (injunction) a state law that reads almost word-for-word like the federal law. That is such a mind-f**k from a logic standpoint.

And now that the Administration says they don't want the state doing their job, wonder if it's too much to ask if they could please get off their a**es and do it now!! Even though I'm not affected personally down there (though the implication of people getting to just ignore the law wholesale affects all of us), I look at this border problem from the standpoint of terrorists easily sauntering in. Wait till an incident happens and watch how fast people pull their heads out of the sand. Ok, off my soapbox now
