German trial hears how Iranian agent warned US of impending al-Qaida attack

The United States was warned of impending September 11 terrorist attacks by an Iranian spy, but ignored him, German secret service agents testified yesterday in the trial of an alleged al-Qaida terrorist.
The spy, identified as Hamid Reza Zakeri, tried to warn the CIA after leaving Iran in 2001, but was not believed, two German officers who interviewed him told the Hamburg court.

Zakeri worked in the department of the Iranian secret services responsible for "carrying out terrorist attacks globally", one of the officers said.

Prosecutors called the spy as a surprise witness against a Moroccan man, Abdelghani Mzoudi, who is on trial for being a key aide to three of the September 11 hijackers.

He is said to have handled money, covered for absences by members of the al-Qaida cell based in Hamburg and trained in an Afghan al-Qaida camp himself.

Having worked CI's bofore, you can't take everything they say without history with 'em or at least a second source. I doubt he named the date and MO of the attack. If that is even half true, It would seem to me that that is a strong case for invading Iran. Since we have them in a pinsor (troops in Iraq and Afganastan) we are in a good tactical postion. I bet you believe Howard Dean when he slandered the president by saying that the Saudi's warned him of 9/11.

so seeing your reasoning if Iran helped plan/funded the terror attacks then we should invade their country? So you're then saying its ok for Israel and Palestine to have a NBC war with each other, because of the daily to weekly occurance of terror attacks from both sides? We're trying to stablize the region. While yeah total domination or conquering can do this that isn't what the US is about. For some time now, the US has been a country that gives back what it takes in war.

The above was just about the case to invade iran, nothing more. I agree with you that even if the US knew of a specific threat they wouldn't have cared at that time. I'm sure since they 'do' get numerous threats quite often its very hard to treat them all the same and still do your normal jobs.

The US seems to have a policy to cover its *** in conflicts. This is generally by letting the other side strike first. This is mainly so we're 'not' seen as a conquering force.

As the threat of terrorism mounts here in the United States, the need to address the failures of September 11 is more important than ever. It is an essential part of "lessons learned".

As such, this commission has an extremely important task before it. I am here today to ask you, the commissioners, to help us understand how this could have happened; help us understand where the breakdown was in our nation's defense capabilities.
