    State of the Union

I will just say that I was very impressed with the speech tonight, I thought it was absolutely awesome. There was too much stuff in it to single anything out, but maybe someone else will. Poor President spilled the Vice Presidents water at the end, I got a good laugh out of that.

so i'll be watching it when it gets archived.

One of the most uninspiring State of the Union speeches I have seen since the Carter days. More programs, more laws, again no way to pay for them.

I thought it very funny that Bush mentioned cutting spending to half the deficet in 5 years. Seeing that the President and his party was ultimately responsible for the deficet to start with - this was very amusing.

A public speaker our Commander in Chimp is not. Perhaps he would be better suited to be an civil servant.

the fact of the deficit and spending money he doesn't have is what irks me about bush's reign. The only thing that I do like is the fact he wants to expand the space program. Personally there are more problems here at home, yes, but we are running out of time for this earth. Not in my life time, nor any of my children's, but I'd rather leave a good legacy, not one of scorched earth.

I think his space program is merely a ploy to scuttle the ISS and the Shuttle Programs. I doubt we will ever see Mars in our lifetimes. I also doubt that Bush will accomplish much in the field of science. He lacks the foresight and mental capacity to see the big picture.

If he offered you a million bucks you would still hate him, so why stress yourself listening to what he says since it doesnt matter to you anyway?

Please please please - don't assume like DC. This is not about hate or like -- it is about how our country is headed. I listen to the SOTU because it is important - even if you don't agree with it.

Why do you think it is important if you doubt everything that is said? And since he has no mental capacity or foresight why is it important to listen to the garbage?

    A mere four years ago...

We begin the new century with over 20 million new jobs. The fastest economic growth in more than 30 years; the lowest unemployment rates in 30 years; the lowest poverty rates in 20 years; the lowest African-American and Hispanic unemployment rates on record; the first back-to-back budget surpluses in 42 years.

Next month, America will achieve the longest period of economic growth in our entire history.

We have built a new economy.

Our economic revolution has been matched by a revival of the American spirit: Crime down by 20 percent, to its lowest level in 25 years. Teen births down seven years in a row and adoptions up by 30 percent. Welfare rolls cut in half to their lowest levels in 30 years.

My fellow Americans, the state of our union is the strongest it has ever been.

As always, the credit belongs to the American people.

My gratitude also goes to those of you in this chamber who have worked with us to put progress above partisanship.

Eight years ago, it was not so clear to most Americans there would be much to celebrate in the year 2000. Then our nation was gripped by economic distress, social decline, political gridlock. The title of a best-selling book asked: "America: What went wrong?"

In the best traditions of our nation, Americans determined to set things right. We restored the vital center, replacing outdated ideologies with a new vision anchored in basic, enduring values: opportunity for all, responsibility from all, and a community of all Americans.

We reinvented government, transforming it into a catalyst for new ideas that stress both opportunity and responsibility, and give our people the tools to solve their own problems.

With the smallest federal workforce in 40 years, we turned record deficits into record surpluses, and doubled our investment in education. We cut crime: with 100,000 community police and the Brady Law, which has kept guns out of the hands of half a million criminals.

We ended welfare as we knew it – requiring work while protecting health care and nutrition for children, and investing more in child care, transportation, and housing to help their parents go to work. We have helped parents to succeed at work and at home – with family leave, which 20 million Americans have used to care for a newborn child or a sick loved one. We have engaged 150,000 young Americans in citizen service through AmeriCorps – while also helping them earn their way through college."--January 27, 2000 State of the UNION

For me, I don't hate Bush in the least... In fact I am glad he's president in that AMERICA can get a nice stiff wiff of the conservative agenda and make a choice...
