Nice choice. I hope she runs for Prez. I hate to see Powell leave.
WASHINGTON, DC, Nov. 15 (UPI) -- National security adviser Condoleezza Rice is President George Bush's choice to replace U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, sources told CNN.
It was announced Monday that Powell had resigned.
Should the Senate approve Rice's nomination, her top deputy, Stephen Hadley, would be promoted to national security adviser, two senior administration officials told CNN, saying Rice's nomination could be announced as early as Tuesday.
Powell said Bush accepted his letter of resignation Friday and said, "It has always been my intention that I would serve one term."
Powell had said he served at the pleasure of the president, suggesting he might stay longer if the president asked.
"He was not asked to stay," said a senior State Department official. However, Powell "never asked to stay and was never asked to leave."
Powell, scheduled for a trip to Egypt next week on Iraq, said he expects to act fully as secretary of state until he leaves, which could be weeks or a month or two.
