18 Ways To Be A Good Liberal

18 Ways To Be A Good Liberal

    1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.

    2. You have to believe that businesses create oppression, and governments create prosperity.

    3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are more of a threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and North Korean communists.

    4. You have to believe that there was no art before federal funding.

    5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving SUV's.

    6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial, but being homosexual is natural.

    7. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.

    8. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.

    9. You have to believe that hunters don't care about nature, but PETA activists do.
    10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it.

    11. You have to believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of his own money to make The Passion Of The Christ for financial gain only.
    12. You have to believe the NRA is bad because it supports certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution.

    13. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high.

    14. You have to believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E.Lee, and Thomas Edison.

    15. You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas and set-asides are not.

    16. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.

    17. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag and transvestites are good and should be constitutionally protected, and manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal.

    18. You have to believe that this message is a part of a vast, right wing conspiracy.

    Have a Super Duper Day!

18 Ways To Be A Good Liberal

    1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.
I'm against capital punishment primarily on the basis that the wrong person may be executed and the real murderer is still free. I'm in favour of, where it's appropriate, keeping people in prison until they die there. Some people say that that position (prison until death) is savage and cruel. I don't care.

    2. You have to believe that businesses create oppression, and governments create prosperity.
I believe that business - corporations - are paragons of self-interest with no ethic other than seflishness. Milton Friedman agrees with me on that. I believe that governments should legislate to ameliorate the excesses created by corporations in the interest of society as a whole.

    3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens are more of a threat than U.S. nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and North Korean communists.
When was the last time an American citizen in the US was murdered by a Chinese or North Korean communist with a nuclear weapon? Now when was the last time an American citizen was murdered by a fellow citizen wth a gun?

    4. You have to believe that there was no art before federal funding.
I know for a fact that Thoreau wrote "Walden" while sojourning in the wilderness. I also know that private patrons have supported various artists throughout history.

    5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving SUV's.
Forget the soccer moms theory, it's old hat. We've identified the problem - it's certain industries indulging in the pursuit of profit without regard to the environment (refer your point 2).

    6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial, but being homosexual is natural.
Gender roles are socially constructed, the evidence is there. Sexuality is natural but appropriate sexuality is also a social construct. People have practised heterosexual relations and homosexual relations in many forms since sex was invented.

    7. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.
The science is in on this, how it's spread is well known and any decent government will fund further research and education and prevention programmes. The South African government is not one of them.

    8. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach 4th-graders how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
So no-one can read any longer? When did that start?

    9. You have to believe that hunters don't care about nature, but PETA activists do.
PETA activists aren't concerned with "nature" just intentional cruelty to animals. Conservation activists are concerned with nature. So are farmers, well good ones anyway.

    10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it.
You can't 'earn' self-esteem, you're confusing it with admiration from others. Self-esteem is learned, not earned.

    11. You have to believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of his own money to make The Passion Of The Christ for financial gain only.
What Mel Gibson does with his own money (as long as he's using it legally) is of no consequence to me.

    12. You have to believe the NRA is bad because it supports certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution.
The NRA is a special interest group concerned with protecting the Second Amendment. The ACLU states that it supports the Constitution. All of it.

    13. You have to believe that taxes are too low, but ATM fees are too high
    .

The concept of progressive tax is good for society. ATM fees are just prices set by private corporations in pursuit of their own interest. Good competititon will allow me to pick the institution that doesn't rip me off.

    14. You have to believe that Margaret Sanger and Gloria Steinem are more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, Gen. Robert E.Lee, and Thomas Edison.
I happen to believe that ordinary people are overlooked by historians.

    15. You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas and set-asides are not.
I don't like standardised tests for reasons not connected at all with racism. The reasons are all technical. Racial quotas don't help anyone.

    16. You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn't worked anywhere it's been tried is because the right people haven't been in charge.
No, I believe that socialism hasn't worked because of the fact that capitalists were smart enough to ameliorate the worst excesses of capitalism in mixed economies (see point 2 again).

    17. You have to believe that homosexual parades displaying drag and transvestites are good and should be constitutionally protected, and manger scenes at Christmas should be illegal.
Free speech isn't an absolute but it should be protected from unreasonable interference. People should be free to worship how they wish, provided it doesn't conflict with the law. People should be free, for example, to see the words "Allah" and "Mohammed" on the skin of a fish, or see the face of the Virgin Mary in a piece of burnt toast or on the wall of a church.

    18. You have to believe that this message is a part of a vast, right wing conspiracy.
    Of course I do, I'm a liberal :D

BZZZZZZZZZZZZ WRONG. PETA is a domestic terrorist group. They are on the verge of losing their tax excempt status for criminal acts.

The NRA is a special interest group concerned with protecting the Second Amendment. The ACLU states that it supports the Constitution. All of it.
BZZZZZZZZZ WRONG! The ACLU claims to support all of the Constitution except the 2nd Amendment. Says so right on the front of the ACLU webpage.

The NRA is a special interest group concerned with protecting the Second Amendment. The ACLU states that it supports the Constitution. All of it.
To echo Norm. Sorry Oscar, this is wrong. The ACLU will be the first in line to try to uphold the "fairness" doctrine if it's introduced. You may or may not be familiar with it but it's when liberals who can't garner an audience because of the content of their show go after the ones who can to shut them down. They claim it gives equal time to different views but it's clearly a violation of the 1st amendment. The same thing with the McCain-Fiengold debaucle.
The ACLU has no problem with an Islamic call to prayer in MI. or a public school teaching the Koran in CA. but it will file lawsuit after lawsuit to stop students from praying.
They can somehow find where abortion, affirmative action, and gay marriage are Constitutional rights but it has nothing to say when someone's firearms are illegally confiscated or eminent domain is used for private land usage which is a glaring violation of the Constitution. These are just a few issues mind you. If they were truly objective I would support them but they have become the ambulance chasers for the modern liberal party.
"...Our natural, inalienable rights are now considered to be a dispensation of government, and freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp as it is at this moment.” Ronald Reagan

That's okay, it's just evidence that conservatives have a sense of humour after all

But you post something like this you get a debate - this being RP. But, this being RP, it usually stays pretty civil.

On PETA - they might be Norm, if it pans out that way so be it, but my original point still stands.

On ACLU - You're right Norm. I was wrong in my claim. They say:

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:
Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.

Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.

Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.

Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.
But the ACLU supports more parts than the NRA :D
