Failed out of the academy 3 DAYS BEFORE GRADUATION!

Yep, thats right, I graduate, well.. was supposed to graduate this Thursday, but unfortuanately I've failed a remedial test so today was my last day.

I don't feel defeated, and by no means think that the last 6 months was a waste of my time. I've learned so much and I know that when I come back, I'm going to come back stronger than ever.

My question to all of you is whether or not I can get into a Level 1 Modular class, without going through levels 3 and 2?

My CO told me today that he was fairly certain that I could and if not, that it was likely I could petition them to let me in being that I have essentially learned everything that POST has to teach. He was going to find out the answer for me next week.

Does anyone on her have any experience with this or know of anyone who has done something similar? How did they go about it?

Thank you all for the help!

It's probably going depend a lot on the states rules and you didn't mention where this was. Did you have a sponsor in the academy?

I'm in California and I dont have a sponsor. Out of a class of 55, only 1 was sponsored. Times are tough.

I did check POST website and there was nothing related to my particular set of circumstance. All it says is that the prerequisite for a level 1 course is that you must have completed level 2/3 module within the last 3 years. It doesnt say anything about getting a waiver of any type. I've tried to google related topics and cant find anything even close.

I suppose I could call POST tommorow?

That would probably be a good idea. What modules did you pass and what did you fail?

Edited. Initially, I asked what test did you fail, but then I reread threads you started, read the handcuffing one and assume that you failed that part. It seems odd that you would be flunked on the whole academy on that one issue though.

Also you said it was remedial, does that mean you failed that portion of the testing before and this was a retest? I don't mean to rag on you, but it sounds like this wasn't the only problem you must have had in the academy.

There must be more to the story for you to be given the boot so last minute. I teach at our local academy and that one ding would not be enough to let someone go if all of the rest of their grades were adequate. That said, however, should they fail 3 tests, even if they pass the retests, on their 4th failure, they are shown the door without even the chance to take the retest.

In PA two tests failures will get you kicked out. When you fail the first one, you have a chance to retake it. If you pass you are good to go but if you a fail a second one you are out. No second retest.

    Sorry, allow me to clarify...

I failed the Building Search scenario test. I believe that it would be the Crimes in Progress practical test. During the re-test, my use of force (handcuffing) was thought to be too excessive for the situation (It's a long story. I dont want to bore you.)

The initial test was two weeks ago. Our remedial test was Friday.

That's interesting. I realize my academy was 40 years ago, but if you failed any part of it, you were kicked out and unemployed.

That being said, it was also education based, not G.I. or harassment. I think they did a pretty good job of teaching us to do it right.

I remember the building searches well. They videotaped us (yes, they had that back then) and we got to critique ourselves and others. When it was done, we definitely knew how to do building searches.......

Only one guy flunked the academy and that was on the academic side. We were given a full college course on abnormal psychology and he failed the final. Fortunately for him, affirmative action was even a bigger deal then than now and because of his race, he was allowed to take the academy again. A white guy would have been shown the door.

Our building search scenarios were pre-destined for the cadet to fail. Some situation would be presented that no cadet could rationally and realistically handle. The instructors used our building search scenarios as nothing more than a chance for us cadets to learn. Nobody was failed out of the academy for failing these scenarios, because all would have been failed.
You'll have to contact your state licensing agency, which for us here in Texas is T.C.L.E.O.S.E.
The last few years I have contacted them regularly for copies of my personal information and what not. Also had to get info on how to challenge the states Peace Officer exam again, since I dropped out of L.E. altogether and my P.O. license had expired. They were very helpful and I was, of course, successful in my endeavor. Since I had graduated the academy in 91, and had fulfilled my 40 hrs of training this training cycle, I was able to challenge the test after receiving a letter of endorsement from the state (cost $250.00). If I had failed the state P.O. test 3 times I would have had to attend an accredited academy again.
You'll have to contact POST for the facts and just the facts. They'll be the one to give you permission for an accelerated academy or not.

This sounds so typical "Californian". "Too Excessive for the Situation" PLEASE...give me a break, did you draw blood? If this is the ONLY reason they washed you out, I feel for ya. Like others here I think there might be more to the story, but for now will take your word for it.

Again, only California could get away with using an excuse like that to terminate you.

Based on what he said in his other thread I didn't see any problem with handcuffing the person. They come off as easily as they go on, assuming the person is cooperative.

Along with what Samuel said I'm sure there were other things he could have done differently but this is the academy. You can't expect someone in the academy to do everything perfect, unless there really is more to the story. It was my understanding the instructor's job is to help correct these things, but then again some people can't be helped(not saying this is the case with the OP as I don't know him other than a screen name).
