    Taser training?

How often do departments train with Taser's using live cartridges?

The reason I ask is I recently read a report that reminded me about the revolver days and the study abut finding police officers that got shot having spent brass in their hands and their pockets because at the range, they policed their brass during shooting/reloading and they reverted to that when they were in a combat shooting situation.

Fast forward to officers that spark test their Taser at the beginning of the shift. First step is draw the taser, second step is removing the cartridge, etc, etc. Recently there was an incident where that muscle memory had an officer try to deploy his Taser over a distance and discovered he had his cartridge in his hand. training is almost non-existent with cartridges and certainly no where near the recommended spark test interval.

Anyone heard of this before? Any departments routinely train with live cartridges through a complete deployment? Any depts get rid of routine sparks test?

It doesn't surprise me. When I got trained my department was too cheap to buy cartridges for people to shoot one. When I worked the jail in NC spark tests were banned because of too many accidental discharges.

The spark-test is no different than doing a press-check with your handgun as you are gearing-up. It does not replace training. It assures you are ready to work.

Anyone ever hear of a FATs simulation TASER that lets officers draw, aim and fire in proper sequence like the pistols?

FATs has nothing on VirTra. I have the 300 just around the corner from my office.... 5 screens (310 degrees around you) with multiple weapon systems (taser, OC, AR/M16, shotguns, etc.) and responsive scenarios. You can do low-light scenarios and the only part of the screen that lights up is that part hit by the specially designed lights (weapon mounted and hand held lights available). We even have a garage door opener-sized attachment that you wear on your belt that shocks you when you are shot (negative feedback).

So your the 5th one sold? I don't think training simulators are on the budget horizon anytime soon. It looks awesome though.

They won't even let the dog bite me through a suit. Something about liability. I even told them I would have the more realistic smell of fear and they wouldn't go for it. Sometimes even the officers can't get cleared to be tased even if they want to.

Our department usually trains once a year on tasers. We also learn about the new updates as well.

    Adam-

"Our Department" implies that you are a police officer. We have a requirement here about persons claiming to be Law Enforcement Officers. They must be verified by the site in order to make such claims.

Please let me know, either in a thread or via PM if you meet the requirements listed here. If you do, then please follow the instructions over here so we can get you verified. This will give you access to the restricted areas of the site, and elimiate confusion about who is or is not a Law Enforcement Officer on the site.

    Thanks for understanding.
