    Donation

I work for a smaller north texas police department and I am trying to start up a bicycle patrol at my department. Right now the chief has some what agreed to it, with the exception of I have to buy my bike and he buys the uniform and equipment. If you know of any department that is willing to donate some bikes or sell them at a very reduced cost please let me know. Or if you know of a business that will donate the bike(s) or money for pass that on also please.

If you can hope just leave a post here and we can in contact with each other later.

    Thank you everyone

    Check with local bike dealers.

Welcome to RP, might want to take a look at getting verified and I'm sure you'll get a lot more help since we know you're legit ;)

While I am sure that there are several on here that know more about it than me, but you also need to look into getting training/certification before hopping on the bike and patrolling.

There is more to it than throwing on a pair of shorts & helmet and hopping on a bike for a spin.

As already mentioned, elicit assistance from your local businesses. Check with the majoy bike manufacturers, but I think you will have better luck with the local route, as it is THEM who will benefit from the presence and it is with THEM that your department has a rapport.

Also, get verified or you will have to change the name. We don't just take people at their word around here when they say they are the police. FWIW, it is also often regarded as poor ettiquette, making yoru first post to ask for something. Try the rapsheet section... introduce yourself.

Ok everyone I understand about getting verified. I just got on here yesterday and since it takes 2-3 weeks after you mail it in. Well it has not had time to get there yet.

As for me I have been in LE since 1992. I did get out of it in 97. But after a divorce and then marrying a great wife I got back into LE in 01. Everyone that gets into LE for something more than a paycheck can understand how this stuff gets into your blood.

Yes I do know that there is more to a bike patrol than jumping on it and going. I am currently set up to go to a bike patrol course next month (40hr course). The town I work in is about 15000, so there are not a lot of donation opportunities. What I was asking is this. Are there any departments out there that might be willing to donate or sell (at a reduced cost) some of their previously used bikes.

I apologize if I offended anyone by getting on here and asking for something the FIRST DAY. But I thought this forum (to be exact this area of RP) was for. I have been taught that if an officer (brother) needs help then they should ask for it from their brother/sister officers. But if some of you do not have that kinship in LE (like I have noticed alot of the new boots being like) then maybe I should not even be on this sight.

    You didn't offend anyone ;)

About the verification thing, I think you can PM someone (try PM Switchback and he can hook you up with the right information-he might even still do it).

Regarding about other departments donating or selling, I don't know much about that, but I know you would be better off with a newer bike. Take a look at Trek...they may have a program for you guys.

Are you with a Sheriff Department or a local municipality? If you are with a Sheriff Department (which it doesn't sound like you are) there is an organization that could help you get one (for free).

If I see something popup, I'll let you know

Yes I am from a municipality (in north texas). Yeah I would much rather have a new bike, but since the chief is saying we have to buy the bike and they will buy the uniform and equipment for the bike. The price for a new bike starts at $400.00 and goes up (way up) from there. So if someone has a used one in ok shape it good be to start with.

What is TREK? I will look it up and in to it.

    thanks

While I've never personally had to do what you're doing, I found this site by google.

Also, have you maybe tried Craigslist or Ebay? I checked Craigslist in my area and there were quite a few bikes that would fit the bill that were decently priced. Couldn't hurt.
