Except for television and a very few large departments (ie, LAPD) there are never two officers in a patrol car.

My last dept was in the country. A lot of the time I was the only officer in any direction for about 60 kms.

The nearest station to the west was about 35 kms away and that was manned by one officer. The nearest station to the north was further and it had two officers stationed to it, but usually one was only on at a time...if you were lucky.

There were plenty of times when I would be at the western end of our zone, the officer in that area was on days off and I would be up to about 70 or 80 kms from the nearest back up.

You do what you can, and fight the fights you can win.

I was closest back up to an officer to our north once. He was solo and went to an all in brawl at the locl pub between about 30 guys. When we got the call we were about as far from him as we could get while still being in our zone. We had to cover 75 - 80 kms to back him up.

By the time we got there he had sprayed two cans of OC into the air in the beer garden they were in, then closed the door and secured it from the outside. Given it was a small town a few of the locals that the officer knew were assisting him if things got out of hand.

When we got there, everyone was pretty well subdued or under the effects of the OC and we let them out gradually and released them after giving them an order to move on. We didn't have the resources to lock people up, there were no victims because they were all a bunch of idiots, and the OC had certainly knocked the fight out of them. It was funny watching all these tough guys staggering home down the street, crying and red faced. :D

If the state of Texas would barbecue these two I'll gladly cover the electric bill.

I was reading an article in the Police Journal here, that discussed an execution in Utah a few years back where the law provided for the POS to elect injection or firing squad. He leceted firing squad.

I thought it was interesting that the 5 anonymous officers recruited to do the shooting were described as given 4 live rounds and one blank round (divided amongst them) so that they could all live with the fact that it might not be them that kiled him (by having the blank round).

I couldn't help but think I might feel ripped off if I was the one given the blank round!!!;)
