Off-Duty Atlanta Officer Shoots, Kills Apartment Complex Security Guard

MARIETTA, Ga. -- An apartment complex security guard was shot and killed Saturday morning by an off-duty Atlanta police officer, after the guard awoke the officer and his wife by banging on the couple's door.

Investigators said 37-year-old Xavier Mallet of Marietta worked as a security guard for the Ivy Ridge apartment complex located at 2650 Bentley Road in Marietta.

For reasons unknown, authorities said Mallet awoke the couple as they slept in their apartment by banging on their door around 4:30 a.m. Investigators said when the female resident answered the door, the 37-year-old security guard forced his way into the apartment.

Within moments, investigators said the female's husband, 36-year-old John Kevin Freeman, an off-duty Atlanta police officer, confronted the security guard. Investigators said the guard was unarmed.

Investigators said Freeman's wife fled the apartment. The security guard and off-duty officer also stepped outside, where investigators said a second confrontation took place. Investigators said Mr. Freeman reentered the apartment and retrieved a firearm. After doing so, investigators said Freeman shot and killed the security guard as the guard was leaving the area.

When authorities arrived at the scene, they found the security guard lying in the front parking lot of building six deceased from gunshot wounds.

Cobb County detectives have since charged John Freeman with murder and aggravated assault. He is currently being held without bond at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center.

Freeman is a 6-year veteran of the Atlanta police department.

Sounds like this is going to be big trouble for the officer.

I knew Xavier Mallet, he was a ok guy. He was a kind of person you would say hello to and make brief small talk with and move on. He was not a bad person or one that you would go oh god and try to run away or anything like that.

I don't know how to explain it better than that.

FYI, and to save you the trouble of asking me if this is for a school report or research work, it is not, it's just me being curious.

My "take" on this story is that I don't know the whole story. However, from reading only the newspaper story it appears the the "officer" has been appropriately charged and will be prosecuted for an unlawful homicide.

I'd like to hear the whole story, there is obviously a lot left out of the news article.

I will be happy to post updates as the news post them.

Exactly. It's not our job or place to second guess or make assumptions about the actions of another, particularly when only limited information is available. Unless you're "updates" are actual interviews with the officer involved and others on the scene, any further information released from the media will be questionable as far as credibility at best.

No matter how well you think you know the guy, you don't know him. That's why the neighbors of serial killers always talk about their quiet neighbor who was a good guy until he went out and killed fifty people.

I'm sure the off duty Officer didn't suddenly decide to kill someone out of the blue. He had a reason for doing so and only the investigation will tell us what happened.

I agree and the paper just says there was a confrontation outside the apartment then the officer went in and retrieved his firearm. It does not make the connection as to why the officer felt the need to retrieve it. THAT is a big piece left out.

But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

Translation for the intellectually challenged: If the government screws the people too much, it is the right and duty of the people to revolt and form a new government.

The only reason that I did not post this yesterday, is because there is not enough information in that article to tell what really happened.

Cobb County P.D. is a good Dept, and I am 100% sure they had good reason to arrest the guy.

I'm not an investigator, but this right here raises red flags to me....

I'm sure there's MUCH more to this story as others have also stated.

Nor do security guards typically force themselves into apartments.

I mean, we're getting killed for these people and they don't even appreciate it. They think it's a big joke.
