Opinions on radar units - I need to make a department purchase

Hi, I am looking for opinions on radar units. We are preparing next years budget and may be able to buy a couple. So far I got quotes from Kustom and Stalker. Stalker seems easier to connect and is also on our state contract. I did not get in touch with MPH only because I have sent units to them in the past for repair and the turn around time was 3 months. I did not get in touch with Decatur because they have HORRIBLE customer service.

I'm looking on opinions from all of you running radar units as to which you prefer and why...and if service was needed how that was handled by the company.

    Thanks for your input.
    Mike

    Mike-

I think you will find you will get a better response to yoru question if you get verified as an LEO.

As I'm sure you are aware, we ask anyone who claims to be an LEO to get "Verified" as such to prevent confusion among our members as to who is or is not actually a cop.

You can find instructions for how to do that here, and the requirements for verification over here.

    Thanks for your understanding-

    Thank you, sir.

We use the Stalker Dual XL, and the product and service are both very good, IMHO.

(I deal much more with the unit itself than the service; I'm just a peon at work...)

I grew up with the old Kustom KR-10, then we went to their Eagle line. Nice units, the only two things I didn't like were... first, the cord connectors between the box and antenna were cheap plastic instead of metal. If a unit was not assigned to a specific vehicle and had to be put up and taken down every day, the plugs didn't last long before cracking. The other thing I didn't like was the configuration and weight of the remote compared to the KR-10. It took some getting used to.

Kustom was pretty good about replacement parts if we needed any. Service and calibration was handled by a local vendor. We've got a bunch of Kustom's ProLaser IIIs as well. Also nice units, but the screw-in batteries suck. They don't last very long and the locking rings where they screw in at the base of the handgrip crack constantly.
