Not a LEO, but Im curious to know, what kind of siren does your department use? My city's PD uses the Unitrol Touchmaster, which IMHO has the coolest siren tones. They are expensive though, so I am curious to know what other departments are using.

eek, hilo? :P
aye, scientifically proven to work better. maybe not just hilo but the one that doesn't 'scare' people stiff when they hear it, forgot the name, think it comes from England.

We use Federal Signal Corp. PA300. Love the Airhorn.
Legs and Eggs the Breakfast of Champions starts every Friday at 6am.
Ours go nee naw, nee naw, havn't a scobby what make they are.
We have a HI-LO optoin on our sirens, but people DO NOT get out of the way for it.
Sorry, I have no idea who our siren is by.
In time we hate that which we often fear.
Visit nwham.com for accurate Ham Repeater information.
People probably dont move for it because its uncommon in the US.
the study I'm referring to and no sorry I can't remember any of the details. It was basically to find out which tunes and why they seem to make people physiologically & psychologically 'freeze' when they hear it. The study was to find out what sound and sound pattern is best so people don't freeze when you're trying to get around them. It was a european study, I think it was done in England.

We are 'required' to switch to Yelp 200 feet before an intersection because studies have shown it to be the most audible from far away. I love doing a yelp/phaser/air horn combo to get these driver's attentions.Originally Posted by ngcsubutterbar
I say 'required' because thats what we were told we had to do during our Emergency Vehicle Operators Course. We were also told that when the lights are on, our siren has to be on the entire time too, but who really uses the siren at 3am when no one's around (ok I take that back, firefighters use the siren every chance they get :p)
"When I die, I want to go like my Grandfather did, in my sleep; not screaming like the passengers in his car"
Federal Signal wail/yelp/hi-lo
It is not uncommon for me to resort to getting on my PA system and yelling... " PULL OVER AND GET OUT OF MY WAY !! "
I assure you that this has a pronounced effect, especially in an urban area.![]()

I just started working as a Police Cadet at my college and we work along side L.A. Sheriffs Dept. I believe they use Code-3 something or other. As for people not getting out of the way, I think that's due to the fact that whenever there's a police chase televised on t.v., the guy broadcasting advices people that the best thing to do when they see sirens is to keep doing what your doing so you don't get in the way of the police.
like I said it was a study done on the unconsious reasons why people freeze when they hear certain sirens.
