    Entry Ram ?

I have had a Arizona Officer ask me to make him a entry ram. ( I am a welder by trade).

I have googled it but the only info I can find is that they are 32.5" long and weigh about 32-50lbs and they are black in color.

Does anyone know the diameter of the actual ram that hits the door knob? any info or better pics would help! Has anyone tried to make one before? Thanks in advance - VICTOR51:D

It all depends on how you want to make it. I have seen some with the entire ram about 4" in diameter. Others have a wide plate to impact the door.

I think the thinner option is better. It allows a higher force per square inch. You can also vary the weight. It dpends if your friend wants it to be a 1-man or a 2-man ram. You can also make it hollow and then put an inner, weighted cylinder inside and then seal it up. This allows the inner part to move and it will slide giving a second impact with the inertia... pretty good stuff.

Back when I started, all of our door rams were home-made. The best one we had was made to drive posts, if you can believe that. It was almost the exact size of the most popular store bought sizes available now. I wish had thought of getting into the ram making business back then.

We had one ram we called "The two man ram" because it was about five feet long, about eight inches in diameter, and weighed about two hundred pounds.

It had handles down both sides, luckily, because it took two people to use it. But, I never saw any door it didn't knock down. I don't know how many CA1's that thing generated. :D

I had not thought about putting something that would slide in it. I was thinking of feeling it with some sand or cement (?) maybe. I do like the idea of putting something that would slide in it.

    Thanks fo your help. -VICTOR51

They can really run the gambit in weight. It all depends. I like a heavier one, but some may not be able to handle it that well. You also need to consider how it's going to be used and how mobile someone needs to be with it.

In a perfect world, you do a site survey before you hit a place, and select your entry gear accordingly. I've seen doors built so flimsy that the ram went through the door without opening it. I also seen crack houses in New Orleans, with two hundred year old two inch thick oak doors, set in oak frames, that rams just bounced off.

So, I wouldn't just stick with one size or style. Plus, trust me, when the G is buying, if you offer three different rams instead of one, you will often make three sales instead of one. :D

My RAM is 4 and half inches wide in diameter and 31" long. The body is round and is about 40 pounds. One end has 3" of solid hard rubber. Ther other is flat metal that accepts a "end plate." We then have a few different kinds of end plate we can attach that vaires by the door we are hitting (Small square, big square, round circle) and they are 3-5 pounds.

My giggest tip: Keep in mind the handle size and placement. Most guys/gals wear gloves and some have big hands. Keep the handles wide and make sure they are set more towards one end.
-In God we trust. All others, put your hands on the car and don't move.
