Thigh Holsters

well, thanks to uncle sam, i was finally able to get some web gear. i bought a safariland sls thigh holster instead of the usual duty holster. i am hoping that this will help reduce the weight on my hips and back. anyone have any exp. with thigh holsters good or bad?

In what capacity will you be wearing this thigh holster? Patrol?

yeah, patrol, i actually just started wearing this holster today and the difference is amazing!! it takes a little getting used to but i really do like it.

I am not sure why, but I get a hinky feeling when I imagine a thigh holster for patrol. What retention level is it?

I work with a SWAT team leader, and I will ask him his opinion.

its a level two, i kinda felt the same way at first, but it actually seems to be pretty functional considering.

The only problem I know of with a theigh holster is driving. if you are sittign in your car and have to draw your gun to save your self its a major ***** to do so cause of how the gun is sitting. I have one I use it at the range once in a while or when I train with the SRT guys as a bad guy (terrorist) or sometimes they let me help clear with them during practice raids.

I wear thigh rigs all the time, specifically the Safariland 6004. I can usually out draw about anyone I know in that thing, even if the person is wearing an open-topped belt slide. All that speed with pretty decent retention. Thee thing is tough as hell. I wore one for my Sig through Sog selection (3 weeks of basic training-like abuse) and it held up great. I have had another for my Glock for 5 years now. The things has performed flawlessly. I wear mine for SRT entries, several swat schools, as well as 15-20 weeks a year for SOG training/missions.

Now, as mentioned above, they suck when drawing frmo the seated position. I'd carry a backup in the evst if I were wearing one on patrol. Usually when I am wearing mine, my handgun is my backup.

I use the Safariland 6004 as well and my experience is basicly the same as Switchback's. It's a great holster with a good retention level, but I wouldn't want to be seated in my car and have to draw it quickly. Once you get the hang of it, it is very quick on the draw.

Plus, I have the model for a Glock22 with an M-3 light attached which is a big plus in my book. In my office, we frequently do 30 day TDY's where you are flying over open water in the open door of a helicopter. The last thing you want to do is look down and see an empty holster!

same deal as the previous two, except I've only been carrying it for 2 years and for a G23. I'm getting one of the updated versions with the M6 light in a month or two. For police type work, it is great and is nearly indestructable and thus willnot damage your weapon, however, when crawling around in dirt and mud, not have a flap over the grip is a real hinderance, and can really gunk up the weapon, so I wouldn't recommed it for military use. I'd still use a drop leg style, but I'd have to get one with a flap over it.

FYI, I broke one of mine after 2 years. It was 2 years of some really hard abuse, though. The spring that lifts the hood up to lock it in place broke. Safariland took care of it right away, of course. I later had the thigh baddle break too. IT was still functional, but I would get pinched by it every now and then.

That being said, they still have my vote!
