What does everyone think of the monadnock SX-24 expandable riot baton? Just about everyone in my department has one. i think they are cool.

I've carried a baton for 10 years and I haven't used the thing yet other than to break out a window or two. Right now I carry an expandable PR-24, but if I had my choice I'd carry a straight stick. It's just easier to have on your belt.
One Big Ass Mistake America
I have never seen one, but I do not like expandable batons in general. A lot of moves in crowed control require a thrusting motion. If you make contact how do you keep the baton form collapsing? That is why I also do not like the APS.
How come your house has wheels and your car doesn't?
The SX24 is only 24" long (expanded). I don't think anyone, including Monadnock, classifies it as a "riot baton". I prefer the MX24 - 1" diameter fits my hand better.
I'm familiar with 3 "locking" systems for expandable straight batons - friction, Positive Lock, and AutoLock (the last two belonging to Monadnock). If you have Posi or Auto, you probably won't run into any accidental collapses. If you have a friction lock baton, you might run into some problems if 1. your baton has experienced substantial wear and tear and/or 2. if you didn't expand it well/properly to begin with.

The day we got tasers, I dropped the ASP from my belt. No sense in carrying an ASP or Side handle baton if you got the taser. Plus on our use of force ciriculum, the taser is ahead of the baton... Good Stuff......
I have a friction lock expandable - it does the job, but putting it away can be kind of a headache!
My buddy, and fellow LEO got suited up with a new ASP expandable baton. It opens like my friction lock, except that his locks out at the end, and no matter how hard to smash it, it won't collapse on you - there is a button in the butt end that you have to press in and then push to collapse it.
Looks a little funny, as the ball on his baton is oddly shaped (looks like a NURF product); but he's the one laughing when I'm smashing my ASP against the gound for 5 min!
Does ASP make a button release baton? If not, then it's probably a Monadnock AutoLock. If it IS a Monadnock, then you shouldn't call it an "ASP"... ;)
Sounds like rgs83 is talking about a Monadnock Autolock with Power Safery Tip. (rubber tip about 2" long?).
ASP is just a manufacturers' name that has been adopted as the general term for referring to expandable batons.
Hope you don't miss with that taser, or get into a multiple suspect situation where batons are very handy.Originally Posted by EJCOP
