Police Officer University of California Merced (brand new department/campus)

BE A FOUNDING OFFICER
JOIN THE UC MERCED POLICE
DEPARTMENT

The University of California Merced Police Department is recruiting for a highly qualified police officer to join the founding five officers of the UC Merced Police Department.

University of California-Merced police officers will provide public safety and
law enforcement services on and near the main campus and other University
properties. They will engage in preventative patrols using vehicles, bicycles, or on foot. Police officers are responsible for the enforcement of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances, as well as University traffic and parking rules and regulations. To this end, officers make arrests, book and transport prisoners, write reports, write citations, conduct investigations and maintain custody and control of evidence and other entrusted property.

Our officers also provide for safety and security of persons and property at University ceremonies and events, supply first aid, address hazardous situations, testify in court, and make public presentations and appearances. As founding officers the UC Merced police officers will report directly to the Police Lieutenant and assist the Lieutenant, and Chief in establishing a progressive, first-class university police department, rooted in best practices and high standards.

Police officers at UC Merced will fulfill a variety of available duties and
assignments, including bicycle patrol, criminal investigations, threat
management, crime prevention, and participation on task forces. Aside from
specialty opportunities and promotional opportunities at the Merced campus,
officers are also potentially eligible for transfer to assignments at the other nine University of California campus locations.

Requirements

Applicants must be 21 years of age at the time of appointment, must possess a valid California driver license and must have current U.S. citizenship or
permanent resident alien status and achieve citizenship within three years.
Persons with felony convictions are ineligible. We prefer candidates who have
completed at least 40 semester units or 60 quarter units of college, but at a
minimum, applicants must possess a valid high school diploma or GED.
Applicants who are currently employed as a police officer in California and have completed a POST certified Police Academy are eligible to apply
We expect applicants to have excellent verbal and written skills, the ability to
use computer devices and programs (including word processors) and the abilityto interact with a diverse constituency.

Police officer applicants must establish that they meet or exceed the minimum
standards established by California Commission on Police Officer Standards and
Training (POST), using approved tests.

All applicants are required to complete an oral interview, a writing exercise, an
extensive background check, POST-certified medical and psychological
examinations.

Salary Range

The salary range for police officers is $22.11 - $29.34 (hourly), $3848. - $5105. (monthly), and $46,176 - $61,260. (annually). We offer additional stipends for POST certificates ($175/month for intermediate or $275/month for advanced) and specialty assignments ($175.00/month). The department also provides an annual $725 uniform allowance.

Benefits

University police officers will work variable shifts equaling 80 hours every two
weeks, with overtime opportunities. Officers accrue ten hours of vacation per month. The vacation accrual rate increases to 12 hours per month at 10 years of service, 14 hours per month at 15 years, and 16 hours per month at 20 years.

The University designates 13 holidays per year, and officers are compensated
with 8 hours of leave per holiday. Officers earn eight hours of sick leave, with
no accrual limit. Upon retirement, unused sick leave may be converted to
additional service credit.

Police officers are members of the safety plan within the University of
California Retirement System (UCRS). Unlike many agencies, this plan is fully
paid by the University – officers are presently not required to contribute from
their salary. After vestment with a minimum of five years of University service,
officers may retire at age 50 with a pension based on the number of years of
service multiplied by 3% of the average of the highest three years of salary, up to a maximum of 100%.

In addition to the retirement plan, officers may elect to participate in a taxdeferred 403(b) savings plan, a 457(b) deferred compensation plan, and a
voluntary after-tax defined contribution (DC) plan. The University also offers a
pre-tax health care reimbursement account (HCRA) and a pre-tax dependent
care reimbursement account (DepCare)

Other University benefits include a competitive selection of medical, vision,
dental, disability, accidental death & dismemberment, legal insurance and other insurance plans, including many with premiums partially or fully paid by the University.

University employees are eligible for tuition fee reduction at the University of
California, presently amounting to approximately a 2/3 discount.
Police officers have the opportunity for reduced rates at a local Merced Health
Club Facility, and are eligible for membership at local credit unions.

How to Apply

The best way to apply is online at:http://paws.ucmerced.edu/choose_staff_category.faces

Once your application is submitted, we will likely contact you via e-mail or phone when we begin our selection process.

Applications are accepted on a continuous basis.

The Selection Process

We employ a standardized test that is carefully constructed to measure your
abilities based on job-related criteria. A committee will review all applications for objective evaluation of each application based on job-related education, experience, and characteristics that have been shown to be desirable for successful UC Police Officers. Passing candidates will be invited to participate in an oral interview and written exercise process, conducted by a panel that consists of a cross-section of members of the UC Merced and Merced communities. The panel will ask a series of questions designed to evaluate the candidate’s ability to communicate effectively, to exercise good judgment, and to display other relevant talents and skills.

Top-rated candidates from the oral interview and written exercise are subject to an extensive background investigation, as required by California POST
regulations. All relevant aspects of the candidate’s suitability will be examined,
based on the standard job dimensions for the position of police officer.
Candidates who are discovered to have been deceptive or who do not otherwise meet standards (including dependability, integrity, judgment under pressure and interpersonal sensitivity) will not be advanced.

Candidates who successfully complete the background investigation will be
considered for interview by the Chief of Police. The Chief of Police then decides whether to offer employment to the candidate. Any such job offer is conditional upon the satisfactory outcome of a medical examination and psychological screening.
