From doing a quick google search, "The Co-op" is a large housing area in the Bronx. I would suspect that they are Quasi-LEO since you have to have "Department training program and NYC Police Department Special
Patrolman background and firearms investigation training."

I would also suspect that they get paid better than NYPD's newbies when they knock the pay down to 25K.

ah I see I didn't even recognize 'co-op' as an authority, sounded like a joint hiring test from many different agencies. Thanks.

Co-op City is a huge housing complex in the Bronx with their own police force. Since they are not NYPD they fall under peace officer status. Similar to the college cops or the ASPCA cops.

I went to visit my mother and sister that live in Co-op City and spoke to a Co-op City peace officer today, he said in the past two years they have had many retirements and peace officers have left, but their were only two replacements hired to fill vacant positions. It seems to me they are a small force, but I don't have statistics to back up that opinion.

What is it like? I understand the major complex part, but as in specifics? Is it a high crime area, do they do any kind of special enforcement of sorts? Ive tried looking, but havent come up with anything really solid.

THIS IS NOT A POLICE ORGANIZATION IN ANY WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! SPECIAL PATROLMEN IS A WAY NYPD CAN AUTHORIZE A SECURITY GUARD TO CARRY A GUN WHILE WORKING IN NYC!!! As you know...we have tough gun laws!!! So get around it....security guards who need guns get "Special Patrolman" powers. That means a gun while at work....but teh gun is owned by the employer, and must be left there when you leave. NO POLICE POWERS!!!!

DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME SIGNING UP OR TAKING THIS EXAM!!!!!!!

THIS IS A SECURITY GUARD POSITION...AND THERE ARE HUGE RIFSS WITH THEM AND THE NYPD!!!! INCLUDING THEM CALLING POLICE SUPERVISORS LIEING ABOUT POLICE OFFICERS ON PROPERTY!!!!

    PM ME FOR MORE INFO!!!

Well Joey pretty much summed up the reality of the situation. Joey a question you may be able to answer, "Why would Co-op city need their own peace officers, doesn't the NYPD cover the area?" I'm curious because I've seen both patrolling the neighborhods, and although Co-op city is huge, I'm wondering why they need peace officers with "special patrolmen" powers.

I don't have factual crime statistics but from what I have seen with my own eyes, it is a huge housing complex broken up into different sections and numerous buildings, it is huge.
Co-op city has a little bit of everything, a large elderly community and younger generation. There are gangs present such as the bloods and crips. Again this is just my personal take from what I have seen when I visit my family there.
