I suppose you would have to have him show you some proof, then perhaps call and verify that information.

I would never ever believe someone who said they were a police officer if I only knew them from online without some sort of independent, unbiased, untampered with verification system in place. Where could one find something like that?

It is MOST appropriate to display (as a minimum) my badge of authority if I'm acting on an incident, to include a traffic stop. I make traffic stops off duty from time to time and display my badge and police ID when I'm making contact with a driver. But that is just one example.
I am not glued to this ^^^ requirement if I am acting on a critical incident. ;)
