They already put over 500 lbs of gear on a vehicle with brakes factory-designed to handle the "normal" car.... you trying to get us killed! lol
If we armor them, we need to make sure we put a bumper sticker that says "we brake for no one."

You would be amazed in all the engineering that goes into making the vehicles. I remember pulling a few very heavily armored Expeditions off a truck. We were backing them off a flat-bed and my partner had to get on the breaks a bit doing the rather low-speed maneuvering. This company did a good gob with the breaks on these prototypes. IN fact, they worked so well that my partner bent the frame while hitting the brake sharply at 10-15 mph.
So, it was back to the drawing board for that company. We ended up sticking with the more heavily armored B3 level with the Excursions and kept the B2 armor on the Expeditions. I hear that they got the bugs worked out of the Expeditions about a year later.
Also note that just the transport from Jordan to Iraq cost more than most departments would be willing to pay for an entire vehicle. As I said before, I jsut don't think it is practical. The money would be better served on training... as you have to get out of the vehicle sooner or later, so be prepared for more than just ONE situation.

Some rocket scientist where I worked bought 1970 Fords with huge water filled bumpers. The idea, of course was the water in the bumper would cause the bumper to explode and same damage to the car in case of collision.
What it did was put several hundred pounds of weight on each end of the car to make it unstable as hell. Not only was the braking affected, but making a sharp turn at anything other than a snail's pace would whip the car around and it was easy to lose control.
Fortunately, it was a one year experiment, but they still wouldn't remove the things and put regular bumpers on them.
As you stated, any car is engineered for a certain weight and even weight/ratio. Mess with it too much and you have something dangerous to drive.

The LAPD has been using ballistic panels in the front doors of the black and whites for at least 10 years. They do make the door a little heavier but it is nothing that you don't get used to and you really do not feel any performance difference in the vehicle. maybe they will help and maybe they won't but if they save just one officer it was a good investment.
Well They have started to armor out doors, the doors now weigh a ton and slam shut , there suppose to be able to stop a 50 Cal.
