It's the running technique that caused the stress fracture. If you are going to run in vibrams (or barefoot, for that matter), you need to follow the Pose Running technique. It is a much more effective, natural running technique that causes a lot less jarring to the body. Rather than casting your feet out in front of you and absorbing a ton of force (and impacting a lot of force, contrary to the path of motion), your feet barely pass your midline and tend to do more "pushing". Google "pose" running" and you will get a far better description than what I can provide.
