That is a very unusual distance Sane! Why 1.8 miles and not 1.5 or 2 miles?

Apparently, I'm supposed to be more angry about what Mitt Romney does with his money than what Barack & Michelle Obama do with mine

In addition to the unusual time, you need to consider if you are talking about the "average" 20 year old guy or the "average" 70 year old woman... they are going to be very different for age/sex.

If you ran 1.8 miles in 6 minutes, you should be on the Olympic team. If you ran half of that (assuming it is .9miles out and back), 6 still seems a little quick unless you have been training really hard. A 12 min 2 mile pace is what you would expect for run-of the mill military guys.

I was dead by the time I did it, I had to hurry because it was about to storm really bad....once you are in the only way out is either turning around or going through the whole thing... and well turning around i just felt like I could'nt say i did the whole thing b/c that would be cheating the hill is at the end.. not really training at all but I do walk the march of dimes six mile walk atleast three times a year..I will never run it like that again I collapsed at the end and sat there for like an hour in the rain.. lol I was dead... thinking omg tomorrow I will not be able to move but surprisingly I was'nt even sore..

tues I did it in 28 minutes..but that was taking my time not running like full force I stopped and walked a few times went down some trails ... so basically I played..

Actually I'm serious about the running time. 1.8 miles in 6 minutes is world record stuff - it's better than a 4 min/mile pace. It's a 12 sec 100 yard dash repeated 30 times without slowing down. It's maintaining a 4.8 - 40 yard dash pace the whole time. A 4.8sec/40yd dash is an all out sprint. I'm thinking you either need to check your odometer or your watch .

yeah i'm thinking so too...lol b/c there is noway I ran that thing in " RECORD" timing..maybe I read it wrong being pooped b/c I kept thinking I ran it fast esp for my second time to be 28 minutes ( I know it was 28 minutes b/c I looked at my car clock) but I walked a lot of it then ... tomorrow we shall see how I do if I don't die doing it

A 12 min 2 mile pace is what you would expect for run-of the mill military guys.
That's actually a pretty fast time for military muldoons.

2 mile times for military men folk:

    Track star: Sub 12:00
    Fast: 12 - 12:30
    Slow fast: 12:30 - 13:30
    Fast slow: 13:30-1400
    Slow: 14-14:30
    I am a n00b / pogue / simply don't care as long as I pass my APFT: 1430 +

Females are slower on average by about 10-20%

curious as to what the average running time should be for 1.8 miles?
Depends a lot on the runner, however, rather than focus on time, I'd recommend you focus on heart rate as an indicator of both progress, and fitness. While you don't NEED one, a heart rate monitor you can wear while running is an extremely AWESOME piece of kit, and can seriously help you train more efficiently, effectively, and SAFELY. You DON'T want to push yourself too far, especially if you are new to running.

Do some research online about how to calculate a training heart rate, as there are a few different techniques.

The gist is simple enough in that you calculate a MAXIMUM heart rate based on your age and gender, and this is the number you DON'T want to go past while training. To determine a training heart rate, you use a percentage of your max heart rate to meet your goal for either aerobic, or anaerobic training. Once you have your target heart rate, you set and maintain a running pace to keep you within that target rate.

    Fairly simple.

Progress is noted by being able to cover ground at a faster total time while maintaining the same heart rate. As your health improves, your body won't have to work AS hard to support the same level of activity.

Good luck, don't go too hard, and keep with it. You WILL see improvement.

Well, I think "track star" is a bit generous for a 12 min 2 mile... that would be a mediocre 2 mile split on a 5K... I know, I was a mediocre cross country runner.
