The Marines have adopted Crossfit for their fitness regimens. Many LE and fire departments also use it. FLETC (as mentioned above) is beginning to work it into their programs. The gov even paid for me to go through Crossfit Instructor School. More and more athletic programs are beginning to incorporate it it, as well... it's not jsut the MMA fighters, these days. We have guys from the local football and soccer teams at our gym LOVING what it is doing for them.
In order to excel in a specific sport/activity, you need to still train for those specific routines. However, while Crossfit may not make you the best in any one thing in particular, you will be damned good in about everything. Good luck, trying to find an activity outside of the gym that can make you sore when you are doing crossfit.
