Did you read my post? I put in the Karvonen formula, I explained my rationale for using the higher percentages to compensate for the differences, and did the calculations for each method with the percentages.

And I went to college too. I have an MS in Exercise Phys, took a similar EKG interp course in grad school, have my CSCS and CPT, worked as a strength coach at two D1 colleges and as a PT before I was the police. My thesis was entitled "A Comparison of the VO2max, Maximum Heart Rate, Maximum Respiratory Exchange Ratio, and Maximum Blood Lactate Level Elicited by an Incremental Cycle Ergomerter Test Versus an Incremental Slideboard Exercise Test", in which I ran the same direct O2 collection and heart rate monitoring as you stated, as well as blood sample collection via lancet. I ran the testing on 11 subjects, and the results I presented at the ACSM National Convention. So I'm not just some cop who's telling you about something I read in last month's Flex.

Diets don't work for the specific fact that sooner or later you go off them, if you want to weigh less (or weigh more with less bodyfat), you have to either change your lifestile perminatley in some small but livable way (Whole milk to 2% milk, or watter with lunch instead of soda, or something small and simlple, you won't loose weight instantly but you will loose it and keep it off). or add muscle mass (which by the way doesn't have much to do with cardio, that's weightlifting mostly).

whatever anyone advertises don't expect to gain muscle or loose fat with any speed whatsoever and have it stay off, the people who do that and have it stay off, do it over a period of years.
great post! Yes, you lose muscle with those diets. Less muscle = reduced metabolism.

And when you lose muscle, you may also inhibit production of other things in your body such as hormones, insulin, or antibodies, as they are all proteins. Therefore, low carb diets will destroy muscle and/or may make you sick.

My mistake. I guess that method works too.

My instant reaction to anyone using just HR max is, "Don't do that! Use HRR because it's better.."

    sorry.

there's another point, Flex Mag et. al. mostly post workouts from bodybuilders...why would you want to take advice from someone who probbably hasn't the foggiest how to lift weights without turning their own body into a human chemistry set...and BELEIVE ME a body at 6000% testosterone (i don't know what the actual level is for a steroids user?) acts WAYY different than yours will under similar stress...
unfortunately off the street, but working on a 2-Year CJ Degree (40% Finished).

Yea though I walk through the valley of no radio reception, with backup in excess of 40 miles away I shall fear no evil, for I am a warrior, for whom the ranchers have an affinity, and they can take the head off a gopher at 200 yards.

And they pay for articles. How many artiles would you write if they paid you for each? Consequntly, how much of that info is good, if its written for cash?

    Exactly! Thank you.

I just now made a post in another thread regarding this type of situation. Only credible info such as college books or peer-reviewed scientific journals contain legit info because they are based on research.

Well, I wouldn't discount EVERYTHING in the rags. Some of the workouts are pretty good, and they are nice for variety. The trick is to know what's what before reading them, so that you can discern the fluff from the substance.
