I'm currently a blue belt in Relson Gracie but did a couple years no gi before I got going in the gi. I have done some judo and have a couple black belts in the TMA stuff.

I do a little but I'm REAL rusty right now. Went back to my old custody facility the other week to roll with a buddy of mine who is about a brown belt. He worked the dog crap out of me (i.e. dominated the hell out of me). It was so bad and I was so tired that, at one point, when he was mounted on me, I alMOST asked him to get off me so I could breathe. :p
Looking forward to getting worked again next week...![]()
I did two years in college, now I do mainly Judo (brown belt) and some just all around grappling as well as some catch as catch can.
Tuesday is standup day and contrary to the popular belief that Gracie JJ is all on the ground we do some best standing grappling I've ever seen. Stuff that translates very well on the street for the cop such as having back control when someone resists handcuffing or handfighting when a wrestler ambushes you from behind and tries to suplex. And just like Judo, a lot of the takedowns, of which many come from judo obviously, don't involve going to the ground with the guy you just face planted.

Used to enjoy Judo, shifts got in the way too much. It was watching Royce in those early UFC's that prompted my interest in grappling. My Judo club was very ground friendly & the lack of any BJJ clubs pushed me towards Judo.
Gene Hunt: Anything happens to this motor, I'll come 'round your houses and stamp on all your toys. Got it? Good kids.
Just about every judo club in my area is sport only with very limited newaza. The judo place I go to now and then however has a police academy instructor running it so when I go there he sets me aside and we work on street throws and trips. My takedowns are still my weak point but at least I can drop the totally inept drunk. I don't like randori only because of the bent over posture that everyone dose. It's not what I expect to handle in a fight where people are punching. So when I can work takedowns postured up. I get the to use the one's I prefer not to mention that even in gentle randori I'm 38 years old and brittle so the beating gets scarry.

My judo dojo is very good with the newaza, we do about 50/50. If the guys are bent over all the time that's bad judo in my opinion. That's about not losing, not going for a win. It's just stalling. I usually just drag them forward and go into newaza, if they say, "hey, we're doing stand up work" I just reply that I'm going to take what they give, I would do that in competition all day. Since I started as a wrestler and BJJ guy my newaza is usually better than the average judo guy....usually.
The BJJ standup certainly starts with everyone bent over. Not only that a lot of guys pull their lapels out of their belts and put them behind their arms. I never start standing anyway because I can't risk getting injured on a takedown in BJJ. When I did MMA of course we had to have a more realistic posture but that training was just to dangerous to continue with.
As far as pulling guard I weigh about 250 so I'm pretty good at it although the whole concept is stupid as far as I'm concerned. I just do it to avoid some spaz taking my knees out.
