I'm not a fan of distance running in general and certainly not in police work under the guise of task specifity. Nothing we do involves distance running or aerobic outputs. Chasing a guy is certainly a sprint or hard run and fighting is a whole body movement. If one wants to train for an aerobic base there a lots of things they can do rather than beat their joints into early surgical replacements. I only run b/c some distance runner decided that Ohio cops had to do it. I prefer hill sprinting for task training and if running hurts at any time it's your body saying that sooner or later it will get your attention for good.
Like I said earlier, I enjoy the limited running I do in the park but I don't do it for the sake of running and I keep it to a minimum which is why I think my goal of 1.5miles in under 11:00 is realistic.

I argue on the internet.
I cannot disagree with what you said. But , I have somehow managed to keep running for the past 31 YEARS. I have tried weights, swimming and various other sports and excercises and could not stick with any of them. So I return to what I like to do and for unexlplainable reasons I can just keep DOING.
My pulse at rest after just sitting down goes right to 54. If I lay still a while , I can get into the upper 40's. ( this set off the heart monitor twice when I had outpatient surgery a couple of years ago, and it wasn't surgery related to any running injuries).
I know I can outurn MOST my age and a lot who are younger than me. I also feel good , and know that I dont look like a lot of people my age who look like they are one birthday away from either a heart attack or a nursing home.

The last time I was in the hospital my HR rate hit 40 while I was sleeping. There are many methods for aerobic fitness. I'm not saying that running is bad for everyone but it is certainly a measured high risk.
Right now one of the reasons we don't make passing the run mandatory is because we don't want to have to pay all the disability claims. Problem is there isn't any alternatives to the run being offered.
I argue on the internet.
Our fit test has a 1.5 mile walk and a windmere bike machine as alternatives to the run. The bike really SUCKS! I would rather run with injuries.
Speaking of alternatives... without running, doing nothing more than crossfit, my resting heart rate has been sitting below 50. Yeah, I know, I just can't keep the crossfit comments to myself. I drank the cool-aid and it is tasty! :D

The Schwinn Airdyne, the newer sleeker version, is the bomb but after getting the rower that bike is far in the future for me.
I argue on the internet.
Has anyone ever used one of the Concept 2 (C2) rowers? I'm not big on running; I think I'm like most and pretty much hate it. But I don't mind working out on an Elliptical machine and this C2 rower seems like something I'd like, I'd just have to find a place for it in the house.
When I was a kid I used to ride a bike everywhere but haven't been on a bike in years. That might be another option. Down here where I'm at the weather is normally pretty good for riding a bike.
Wrong door, buddy
C2's are awesome. I have mine in the basement right in front of a tv for when I'm doing long aerobic conditioning. When I do anaerobic conditioning I'm lucky if I can hear a radio with that rower being such a heart pounder.

This could be a good thing for me. I do quite a few weight lifting challenges both online and at the gym, but nada for cardio. I need to incorporate it more than I do now. I just hate running like many people do, but have no significant knee injuries to stop me from doing it.
Now I need to go find out what the heck a burpee is. Maybe we should do a mulitple type challenge buffet style and you match your event to you bodies ability.

Burpees are popular aomng inmates as they can be done in confined areas...
They hurt and smoke you like nothing else can!!!
I like doing my burpees with a jump on a box to make sure I don't get lazy. For really cheap books and great videos check out www.rosstraining.com Ross is a great guy who barely makes a profit on his products and if you want to work out with practically nothing he has a book called "Never Gymless" that shows all kinds of improvised exercises. Full Throttle Conditioning will leave you needing therapy.

The trail running I'm doing every five days or so is going well. I'm making gains but I'm not running enough to get hurt or bored.

Well, whenever it calls for box jumps, I have been using a 36" box. Talk about smoking!!!!
Today, still having problems with the sciatic nerve, I did the 45# weighted pull-up/dead-hang pull-up/kipping pull-up that was posted a few days ago. I was out on travel last week and did not get much done. I am hoping to work around the killer pain in my leg for now and do what I can.
...seeing the doc again tomorrow.
