    P90x

Does anyone know anything about this workout system? A few of the guys here at work purchased the DVD's and I was thinking about giving it a try.

I like the fact that you can do it at home with only a few sets of dumbells but I don't have anywhere to do pullups.

I did a search on this and only found one thread but it was 2+ years old so I decided to start a new thread.

I saw this on an infomercial awhile back and I think it has the same principles as Crossfit. The big difference is that P90x put it in a fancy package and is charging $140.

I am currently in my second week of P90X. So far I am enjoying it. It is more than just a video you follow along with while working out. It also includes an extensive nutritional guide to assist with obtaining the desired results.

Dumbells are a must and a pull up bar is also highly recommended. There is a way to do pull ups without a bar using resistance bands, however it is not an accurate substitute for the real thing.

Although I haven't tried it myself, I have heard great things about P90X. As far as the pull ups, you may want to search the web for "The Perfect Pull Up" It basically attaches to any home door frame allowing pull ups and other exercises.

It very closely mimics crossfit, while charging you a lot of money.

    Crossfit is free.

FWIW, the only benefit I see is that the hand some things to you on a silver platter. Crossfit also goes hand & hand with nutrition. It is just not intermingled with the workouts. Crossfit is big into the Paleo and Zone diets.

Can you do the crossfit at home or do you need a gym?

You can do some crossfit routines at home. Most of them require some, even if very basic, equipment.

You need an olympic bar and a little weight for most of them. A pull-up bar is commonly required, too.

Let's say you wanted to set up your own crossfit gym. You could do it in your garage with nothing more than an olympic bar, some weight, a couple dumbells,a medicine ball, a pull-up bar and a dip bar. That would cover 90% of what is needed.

Of course, they often call for a row machine, which I do not have. Any cardio will due, in that case. I have a pair of gymnastic rings mounted in my garage for ring pull-ups, ring d-ips, and muscle-ups. It's not necessary, but the muscle-ups are a real milestone accomplishment for crossfitters, so it was nice to have the rings to give them a shot.

While, to make the perfect garage gym, I would want a few more things (squat rack, bench, some boxes for jumping, rubber drop plates, 2 additional olympic bars and a GHD bench), there really is very little in terms of equipment requirements. It's very easy to accommodate and you can substitute exercises as necessary.

Have a look at the exercises prescribed on the website and you will see that most of it requires only the most rudimentary equipment. THAT is why you will see pics of military guys doing it while deployed out in the middle of the desert.

I saw the garage gym they had on the web site. Didn't look cheap. I did like that rower. I'm just going to have to figure out a way to hang a pull up bar in my garage. The P90X requires it as well.

I think what Switch means by Crossfit being free is that he is not paying anything extra in his gym (a globo) to do Crossfit. All he does is look up the WOD on either the main CF site or one of the affiliates. Where as I pay to go to a CF gym (which is fine by me, it's worth every penny).

No, what I mean is that you have to pay for the P90X workout. You cannot find it published (legally) for free. It is a series of DVDs (liek 8 or 10 of them) and a training manual. Together, you will do the same workouts (or combinations of those workouts) as part of the P90X routine. You PAY for the program materials.

Crossfit cost nothing to follow. Go to the website and follow the routines. There is a larger variety, people to compare to (in terms of scaling the workouts or just competing with others), and good directions on the site. It cost nothing, providing you have some very basic workout equipment.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as a crossfit gym.

If I go to the website do they have a listing of the gyms?

    -Go to www.crossfit.com.
-Scroll down until you see "Find an Affiliate" and cick on it.
-You will see the states listed on the left. Click on a state and you will see a listing of the affiliates in that state.

    Or just click here.

I do crossfit as well. I feel the best difference is the overall lifestyle that is involved with crossfit. You have a place to ask questions watch videos and with an affiliate you can work together with others that have some of the same goals. Dvds cant do this for you. (personal opinion)
The people on there message board will help you whether you are apart of an affiliate or not.I also have found on there website 22 pages of body weight workouts that someone has put together in a detailed list of workout and where it came from. If you are interested i can email them to you so you can have an idea of the workouts.
