    Fitness Benchmarks for Academy

    I have read a bunch of threads on fitness here, and haven't really noticed much of a trend.

    Can anyone that has been through several academies post sort of a "benchmark" that can be assumed necessary to pass through an academy? For example, going into the academy, you should be able to do 50 pushups in one rep, 50 situps before tiring, 1.5mile run in 11:00, etc. Just general numbers someone should try to hit prior to academy.

    I am trying to prep for the academy (have been for a bit, but got sick for a month :( ) and have about a month to finish up. The only information I have really gotten is be capable of running 2 - 4 miles, which is no problem.

    The above link is to PA's statewide phsical agility standards.

    The 30th percentile is the min standard at hiring.

    The 50th percentile is the min standard after the 5 month academy.

    The acceptable standards are 50th percentile on the Cooper fitness standards for graduation, and 35th to hire. Some agencies have more strict requirements, and some test for other things like flexibility, but this is what the state's only police academy requires.

    For our standards, I would encourage an applicant, at a bare minimum, to meet or exceed a rating of "good" commensurate to the appropriate age group.

    Providing the name of your academy, or at least, the area of the globe you are in, would be helpful to give you a more accurate assessment.

    I am in New York State. I apologize, but don't feel comfortable posting the agencies name I am going for, until I have secured a job.

    I can't post the NY State Police exam requirements due to 15 post rule.

    I am at the 50th percentile there, but not quite at the 70th. I fall just short in terms of push-ups and the run I make in about 11:15.

    I can successfully meet the standards for hiring in my area, and the standards are set at the 40th percentile. I hit those in the physical fitness exam to be employed. Ours fall a bit short of the state police. Anyways, I guess while I can see what areas have requirements, is there a "standard" or general rule of thumb you want to be able to do when you get to the academy. Sure, there are minimal requirements to get hired, but I am sure that you want to be higher than those minimums in the academy.

    I can tell you my areas minimum requirements (40th percentile) were:
    Sit-ups: 38
    Push-ups: 29
    1.5 Mile Run: 12:29

    I know we will be expected to be able to do more than that at the academy...so I suppose what I am getting at, is there a general rule of thumb, say multiply those stats by 1.5 times and be able to do that, etc?

    Looking at the numbers you put on your last post, I would say that your department uses the Cooper Standards. If you google Cooper standards I am sure you find out exactly what you will need to be doing. We use Cooper in CT, and it is not very hard, if you prepare for it.

    When I went into the NYSP I was one of the slowest with a 10:00 something in the initial PT. I finished with a 9:30 and was in mid place for the academy.



    These are graduation standards and most enter passing these...
    Male Candidates
    Age Group: 20-29
    Sit-ups (one minute) 45
    Push-ups 41
    1.5 Mile Run (minutes) 10:47
