    Bad sneaker=Knee problem

I purchased a pair of Nike running sneakers yesterday and I ran about a half mile in them and my knees started to hurt reel bad and then the pain stared shooting down to my shins. I looked at the bottom of the sneakers and both of them are warped pretty bad on the outside heal I know I land on my outside heals a little but this never happened to my other sneakers before... Anyway, I tried running again tonight in my old sneakers but my knees just couldn't take it. Taking a physical agility test on saturday and i'm worried about my knees still being sore. I was wondering if there was anything I can do(besides rest) to get them better, they even hurt when I walk, feels like they are bruised.

I don't know about how to help your knees. Kinda sounds like shin splints?

I do know that the right running shoes can make a huge difference. Find a store that specializes in running shoes. There are a few chains like Roadrunner sports or Finishline, or you may be able to find a locally owned shop. Tell the sales clerk that you need to be fitted for running shoes and they will watch you walk barefoot and then in several different pairs of shoes.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have the right pair of shoes. I have never been a runner and had a lot of issues with my knees when I started out. When I bought the right pair of shoes things improved dramatically.
There are always going to be staggeringly stupid people in the world. What separates you from them is your reactions when you encounter them.

Freshgirl is right. "Running" shoes you get at footlocker or dicks or a regular shoe store aren't real running shoes. You need to go to a specialty store like the ones FG mentioned, or fleetfeet, vertical runner, etc. You may drop close to $200 on a pair of shoes and insoles, but trust me, it is well worth it.

I am not a runner, but when I was in the academy, I bought a pair of Asics that saved me. My knees are shot, and the only shoes today that will run in are New Balance or Asics. But then again, expect to pay well over $100 for a pair of either ones.

    1. Get fitted for shoes appropriate to your stride and foot.

    2. For Saturday, try wearing Ace (or equivalent) bandages to help support your knees.

    3. Try doing ibuprofen to reduce pain and swelling. A typical prescription would be 800mg 3 times daily. You get ibuprofen in 200mg pills over the counter. Try taking 2 or 3 (400-600mg) 3 times daily and see if that will help any.

    4. Try icing (sp?) down your knees or shins to see if that will help any as well.

    Good luck.
