The thing that causes a constant pain on the tailbone...

I'm talking, of course, about bicycles. I have decided that I am going to bike from my house to school this summer (5 1/2 miles each way) and don't currently own a bike. I'm on a bit of a fixed budget, and was wondering if anybody had any suggestions as to which bike would be best for daily road riding that is under $100, user-friendly, and won't make me feel like I crotched a metal pole.

Oscar, while I can't help you out with any suggestions on a bicycle under $100.00, whatever you get you should check on getting a gel filled seat. I had a similar problem to this, but the new seat really helped out a lot.
Check e-bay or craigslist. Maybe you can find a decent bike on there.

You really should have titled this something else. I thought you were talking about some supervisors that I have worked for in the past.:D

Do like I did. Go to Walmart and ride a couple around the store for a while and see which you like best.

And I must second the gel seat. It makes a big difference.

For some reason, the title of this thread made me think of the story of the woman who took her dog to the vet because the dog kept scratching at its ears.

The vet saw the dog, then came out to tell the woman what the problem was.

He told the woman the dog had an inordinate amount of hair growing inside its ears, a rare problem, but one that could be addressed with proper maintenance. He told her he had trimmed the hair in the ear, but was giving her a prescription for a type of hair remover which she could periodically put inside the dog’s ear to control the growth.

She took the prescription to a pharmacy and a short while later the pharmacist provided her with the medication and began to give her standard instructions.

He told her that if she was going to use this medication on her legs, it was suggested to wait a day or two before shaving them. She rolled her eyes and said, “I am not going to use this on my legs.”

He then said, “Oh, in that case, if you are going to use it on your underarms, we suggest you wait about five days before shaving.”

She got a little snotty with her reply of, “I AM NOT going to use this on my underarms. If you MUST know, I am going to use it on my Schnauzer!”

He answered, “Okay, in that case we suggest you do not ride a bicycle for a couple of weeks.” :D

I bought a used Schwinn 10 speed from a yard sale for $20. I have pounded that bike running back and forth to my dads house to do his lawn ( 7 mi each way) for the past several years and it has held up perfectly.

Plus due to its age ( the seller said he had it for 18 yrs) , it isn't very attractive to steal.

And I DID get the gel seat which I would highly recommend to you.

You probably bruised your coccyx bone and it takes a while to heal.
Try wearing extra padding where your tail lies upon the bike seat.

Thanks all for the help! Gel seat...seems to be a required piece of equipment. I am definately going to buy one - been scouring Craigslist for a used bike, and a friend of mine is an avid rider with a $2,000 bike, so he's no help really. Gonna have to take North Patrol's advice and wreak havoc in the Walmart aisles
