    Running Problem

I went running this morning and about 1/2 a mile in the muscle that is on the outside of your ankle and lower leg got real tight and sore. Now I always stretch well before I run. So I have 2 questions.

    1. Is it possible to overstretch your muscles?

    2. My normal gait has me walking on the outside of my right foot (the outside third or so of my sole hits the ground then my foot kind of rolls to being flat on the ground). So I think thats probably what causes it. Does anyone know of any exercises that target mainly the outside of the calf?

How often do you run? Do you run on pavement, sidewalk, track, dirt, or grass? What type of shoes do you have? Are they new, or have you had them for a while?

Go to a good running shoe store. A store that caters to runners. There they will look at your running gait and fit you to shoes that match your over or under pronated gait.

I usually run on a paved bike bath, but the same thing happens when I run on a rubberied track too. I have brand new running shoes and I only run 3-4 times a week (usually M,W,F).

Darin, do you know the name of any stores like that. I live in Ohio and am not familiar with any stores around me that do.

Fleet Feet. It's a chain store. They have locations in Cincinatti, Columbus and Northfield.

Yes and you can injure yourself. But if you have been running for a while, I doubt you'll have a problem with that. How you are stretching makes a huge difference too. How high or rather how long are you stretching? Example, are you counting to 10, 15 or maybe 20 while holding the stretch??

Like Darin already said, thats more the shoe. I will only run in New Balance (I run 5x a week, 3-4 miles at a time), my foot naturally rolls outward (I forget what the tech term is for that). I went to a New Balance store, told the sales guy that and I was fitted with a specific shoe to help against the roll. It made a huge difference in how I run, how my legs feel durning and after the run as well.

If I were you, I'd stay away from "Sport's Authority" or any other major sports chain. In my experience the guys (and gals) that work in the shoe section have little know about the shoes they are actually selling other than whats popular. Frankly when I want a shoe for running I don't care whats popular ...

Is there any charge for the fitting, and do you know how much the shoes generally run?

When I went to the running store (Frontrunners in Columbus) there was no charge for the gait analysis. The shoes I went with are the Nike AirZoom Vermero, and there awesome. They ran me about $140 and are worth every penny. Definitely check it out, you don't want to hurt yourself as a running injury can be a lengthy rehab.

I go to a New Balance store, there is no charge for the fitting. My last pair cost me about 120.00. I'm not sure right now what the number on them is. But I'll look when I get home.

There's usually no charge. The store I went to in Albany, NY helped me out IMMENSELY, and pointed me to the Asics GT-2110...I'm on my third pair, and have never had foot pain. A good store will be able to help you with your selection...being as running shoes can be expensive, it's best to know what you need and go for it.
