    Just had to share

Well today I hit my first landmark in training for the Academy. For the first time in my life I was able to jog 1.5 miles non-stop. I didn't do it very fast (my guess was 16-18 minutes), but I still did it. I probably could have gone another half mile too, but I don't want to overwork myself and have to miss a day of running.

But I do have a question. For someone who has as much work to do as I do... gotta get that time under 11:58 for OPOTA... would I be better off just running/jogging for distance until I get in better shape then working on speed and time. Or would it be better to run for distance and do speed work like shuttle runs, interval training, etc?

I would say it depends on how much time you have. If you have a couple months I would get your cardio up first by running that extra mile. It will be much easier to get your speed up once you get your cardio up. Also, change it up a little. Instead of running your regular 1.5 mile, do some sprints, or when you get in even better shape, sprint/jog your 1.5 mile.
You can bet that I stand ready, when the Wolf growls at your door.

I would say run distance and every two weeks run for time. That is, if you have a couple of months to do this. Start out by running 2 miles, then go up to 2.5 then 3. I wouldn't bother with anything over 3. Not when you only need to run a 1.5 for the test. But this way, you are building your endurance and when it comes time to do the 1.5 for the test it will feel like nothing.

Ok well here's my timeline. My academy starts at the end of August (our PT is gonna be weight training and doing the 1.5 mile run), so I'd like to have my 1.5 mile time as close to or under 11:58. My final PT test for the academy wouldnt be until early-mid december. Plus I work w/ the officer who will be leading PT in the academy, so I'm gonna try and get details about what his PT will entail, but I'd like advice from you guys as well.

Congrats! I know how it feels to hit that milestone - I have to get back to it now that I've been cleared to exercise again. Keep on pounding the pavement!
