    Karate

Hey i used to do karate as a young teen 13-14..i left the dojo because my dad couldnt afford it...

Now im 19 and im thinking about joining a dojo near my university, my question is do i retain my green belt status? In all honesty I am trying to get a black belt fast, I know its not all about the black belt but I want it...

You would be better asking the instructor at the dojo.
Then you would have the correct answers to your questions.
    Best wishes.

If you join a new dojo, chances are you are going to have to start where they see you fit, skill level wise I mean. You will probably not start out as the belt you left at. You may, but even the red belts at my dojo who came in from another dojo had to do their time and test with the instructors at the start to get back their red belt status. Each dojo is different. Why don't you ask the instructors at the dojo you are considering?

Usually you'll start at the belt you left at. Take your time getting your black belt. It usually takes 6-7 years to get your black belt. Good luck to you.

I actually started, just finished my second session an hour ago. Im starting over at white, which is no big deal...much better class, more practical self defense I think.
    Anyways thanks for postin'!

If you are looking to get into law enforcement (or want very practical self defense) I would strongly suggest a grappling based MA. Jui-Jitsu would be my first choice, as long as the instructors train in strikes as well, as well as gi/no gi classes.

Every time I started at a new school I had to start from the bottom again.

If you do the same style, have your paperwork, and pass a skill test an instructor might let you start with an older rank.

I personally walk into every new place with a white belt on. I leave my blackbelt in the bag or at home.

I'd rather not be the out of shape guy who had a rank several years ago and is still trying to do the same stuff.

Start slow from the beginning and you'll have your former experience as an edge.
