Just wondering how your departments feel about the use of pro hormone supplements? The AF(and possibly the DoD) made them illegal 20 Jan 05 as I recall. Any departments outlaw this or encourage it's use?

Possibly readers don't know what I am talking about? Pro Hormones refer to supplements like androstenadiol and norandrostene. Hormonal precursors to testosterone and such. The sort of stuff that Mark McGwire took heat for using thought it wasn't illegal at the time. I see some people have viewed this thread but I don't see any responses.

Many prohormones used to be legal "alternatives" to illegal steriods, however, in recent years many have become banned by the FDA (i.e. illegal). If what you are referring to is one which is banned and illegal, it will be viewed the same as if you took an illegal anabolic steriod. Best option is to use safe products (i.e. protein powder, creatine, glutamine, etc.), as these aren't in danger of becoming illegal.
Safe to say if you can't buy it through legal means (i.e. having to buy if from some guy at your gym, rather than at the local GNC), it's not a legal product.

If it isn't legal to buy and use in the USA ( I cant speak for other countries) , than you as a prospective member of Law Enforcement should avoid it like the plague.
NONE of our physical agility tests award points for being #1 , it is a pass fail. Same with the written and oral exams.

Thanks for the comments. All of the stuff I am referring to can be purchased at a Nutrition Express, GNC or similar retailers. I am not worried about passing an agility test as I have already done that. My thoughts are for down the road. Not being a huge guy I want to best prepare myself to be able to handle physical altercations with suspects who are larger, stronger and so on.

If it can be bought from the above stores, it's not banned by the FDA, and hence not illegal. Simple math on that. ;)Originally Posted by EJV

For the few times you do have to get physical, best to incorporate a normal, regular workout routine including cardiovascular exercise and weight training, as well as a diet rich in protein and other nutrients. Just because a guy has bigger muscles doesn't mean he won't tire easily.

Sorry, but I didn't mean to insinuate that these substances were illegal to normal everyday citizens. However I am currently in the military and it is illegal for me to use these products, FDA approval or not.
Uncle Sam makes his own rules. I know the reasons why they have been outlawed and it seems plausible that a police department would have similar concerns. Therefore I posed the question, as to whether or not anyone on this forum knows of any departments outlawing, for their personnel, the use of such products.
Smoking tobacco is not illegal as a private citizen but many of the departments that I have looked into don't allow their officers to smoke. They could just as easily make a rule concerning the use of pro hormone, and so I asked what experiences people have had with this.
Obviously I plan to work out as I have done for the last 12 years. Pro hormone does little to help without a developed work out in place. It does however assist in faster muscle recovery, delaying muscle fatigue, increasing hormone levels and thus muscle building capability and strength.
And when I previously said "it wasn't illegal at the time" I was referring to it's use in MLB. I can see how that might have led to confusion.
Hope that clears things up.

A good class of Verbal Judo will do a lot more for you than a bottle of ________ .
As was said , you will be able to talk to people in a manner that will prevent you from having to do a WWF Smackdown with them. Being in shape is being prepared but do not neglect your verbal skills. It is easier and less painful for all if you can spar with words instead of fists.
I am 5'6 165 lbs , am 46 but have 21 yrs of experience. I do workout ( especially running) but am not a Mr Universe. In my 80 square miles of area , population of 45,000 and with all of my time on patrol , I can asure you that I have gotten into some physical confrontations with all kinds of people but I can assure you that I have talked MANY more into a non-violent end of a potentially violent call.

Hey, I just came across this thread, and it is of interest to me. I have lived a completely clean life and been determined to get into LE for a long time. However, I took one of those prohormones a while ago in 2004. They were legal and I got them from GNC, the guy told me they worked really well and I didnt even think twice, thinking GNC is a safe place to buy supps. However, as of 2005 they were banned. I plan on telling my BI that I used a banned substance, although it was not banned when I used it. This really would be the only blemish on my admissions. Do you think this will affect my chances or hurt me at all? Thanks for the replies ahead of time.
Couldn't resist the old iron worker joke.....
How do you make a hormone?
Don't pay her.
Banned? What sort. The stuff that I am familiar with is still not illegal on a national level. It might be against MLB, IOC, or NFL rules or something, and I know the DoD is not too keen on the presence of it but...
Anyway please explain. I have not used any of it for about 6 years or more and haven't thought twice about it being an illegal substance but I would like to cycle it occasionally once I am not employed by the DoD, if it is indeed still legal for the average Joe.

Thanks for the feedback. The stuff I am talking about was in the group of prohormones that were banned in '05. Theres all kinds of crap out now that companies are selling and just barely keeping it legal, so its probably best to stay away from everything except for protein/creatine. Anyways, Im really hoping someone wont DQ me for taking something from a GNC. I agree roids and whatnot should be a DQ, but I didnt really do anything wrong in my opinion.
As has been stated before in this, and other, threads, if it's currently illegal, it's usually a DQ. Regardless of whether it was legal in the past, if you currently use it, or used it AFTER it was no longer legal, you broke the law, or are currently breaking the law. And yes, if something is on the fence regarding its legality, I'd stay away from it. I wouldn't want ambiguity in the supplements I'm putting into my body.
