i wouldn't say it's something "any police officer candidate" would take. given the plethora of responses, i'm going to say you're probably one of the few who will be taking it. 6 stations??? so do you water plants? bathe the dog? i don't think anyone knows what you're talking about.

so here's some generic assistance. study. practice. and do your best.

It is a obstacle course. It might have changed since I have gotten out but you need to climb a solid 6 foot wall,go up and down a few flights of stairs, run some laps, and pull a dummy a certain amount of feet. When you are finished with all of that you must be able to keep a steady hand and pull the trigger of a firearm 20 times. I am not sure of the exact numbers of laps/weights etc of these obstacles but this is the basic layout of the course.

That sounds like the exact same test I took for St. Louis 5 years ago. I remember being out of shape and it still being very easy. The only advice I can remember about that test is that you can jump up and down the steps. If you touch every step it will take more time and it isn't realistic.

What's [sic] is the Job Standard Test?

The Job Standard Test (JST) is a criterion-valid physical job task assessment that tests for an individual’s ability to perform both typical and atypical physical tasks which can be expected to be required of a Police Officer’s response to either a routine radio run or critical incident. The Job Standard Test (pictured in schematic below) is a continuous timed event comprised of six stations that must be completed in four minutes twenty eight seconds (4:28) without stopping. The six stations of the Job Standard Test are as follows:

Barrier Surmount: From a kneeling, weapon-ready position the candidate sprints fifty feet to surmount a six foot barrier.
Stair Climb: The candidate proceeds from the Barrier Surmount to a 6-stair climb system and completes three over-and-back traverses.
Physical Restraint Simulation: The candidate proceeds from the Stair Climb to a controlled-force tactics and training device which measures the ability to resist or control force in a physical restraint situation.
Pursuit Run: The candidate proceeds from the Physical Restraint Simulation to a run/jog around a pattern of cones for approximately six hundred feet.
Victim Rescue: The candidate proceeds from the Pursuit Run to a simulated victim rescue involving a thirty-five foot drag of a one hundred seventy-six pound mannequin.
Trigger Pull: The candidate proceeds from the Victim Rescue to a trigger pull station, picks up an inoperative firearm, holds the firearm within a nine inch diameter metal ring and pulls the trigger sixteen times with the dominant hand and fifteen times with the non-dominant hand. Once inserted, the firearm must remain within the metal ring for the completion of the trigger pull cycles.
    • Timing is stopped upon completion of the final trigger pull. This continuous event series must be completed within four minutes twenty eight seconds (4:28).

    Job Standard Test Schematic:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/ch...cant-home.html

The test is explained on the NYPD site much like unhcj described. It has changed since we took it, but you only need to pass it in ~4.5 minutes and most people can pass in under 2 minutes (at least the version they gave my class). If you are working out then it shouldn't be a problem.

    As far as training tips:

You can contact the Scheduling Unit for a JST Tutoring Session which basically lets you take the test ahead of time to see if you can pass, and there will be instructors telling you what to work on.

Run. Cardio is important to get a good JST time, to avoid being a drop-out on runs in PT during the academy, and most importantly to catch the bad guy or save your own life on the street.

Try to find a 6' wall to jump over. If you are short and can't get your body weight over the wall in a jump; then hang onto the top of the wall while "walking up" with your feet. When your feet are close to the top swing one leg over and you will go over easily from that point.

For the 'physical restraint' it is a machine that you push/pull on. Lean your body weight into and away from the machine and keep a solid footing while you maneuver around it. Take your time when switching directions or you have to start over again.

'Victim rescue' is a fairly short dummy drag. Get a low center of gravity and keep your back straight while you pull.

The trigger pull is self explanitory. You shoot with both hands - if you have a weak grip then you can use adjustable tension grip strengtheners that are available at any sporting goods store.

If you feel tired keep moving and DO NOT QUIT. (keep this mentality for everything) Good luck.

JST is another term for Physical Agility Exam. It's takes the wind out of most. Skip breakfast that day or have something extremely light to eat. There is a fence you have to get over for the entrance exam. The academy has recruits complete the same jst again but they have to do it in less time and get over a solid wall. That should be a piece of cake considering the pt their instructors put them through. To be prepared for the jst - run a mile, jump over a few fences, run up and down some flights of stairs, do some weight lifting, squeeze a ball or use handgrips.

The pa has recruits run a mile and a half and do pushups and situps within a set time. It's no longer required to get in but used as a tool to evaluate a recruits physical condition.

It sounds like simply running to get in shape would do you the most benefit. Secondary to that is some upper body strength which you can get from good old fashioned pushups o rweight training.

Running should be at least a mile and preferably up to 3 miles. Build up slowly but you need to have the stamina to go several miles in order to do well on this test.

I did that JST in 2:11 about six years ago. I'd be lucky to pass it today!

Running is probably going to be your best exercise for the JST. It seems that everyone has gone over the test in great detail so you should do great. It must be hard training after having a child but you can do it, never give up!
I took a similar exam for Broward County FL and as long as you have good stamina then you will do fine. Good Luck!
