Just started my long road to fitness..

I decided I need to get in shape. I'm not fat or anything I just don't have the stamina I need to run for a long time. The past 2 weeks I have not eaten any fast food. Today at work, I bought a big bottle of Omega 3 Fish Oil (Good for your heart) and a bottle of Centrum complete. I also drink vitamin water to make sure I really get enough vitamins :p

I jogged 3 laps around my neighborhood.. which is pretty darn big. I feel GREAT! Wow. I had 2 motivators for this sudden change. First and most important, if I do get the NYPD job, I don't want to be a remedial slob. Second, I am taking a sports nutrition class in college and the guy scares the hell out of me because I know I don't eat well enough and I don't want any heart attacks

    Good luck to you guys!

Good for you for trying to get in shape and take charge of your fitness. Some points-

Careful with the Omega 3, as Americans we eat a lot of meat which means we get a lot of Omega 3, and in fact we need more Omega 6 and this should be in a 2:1 ratio so that the body absorbs it the way it should be digested. One comes from only plants and the other comes from animals and plants. Yes we get Omega 6 from meat also because of what the animals will graze on but you should still get an Omega 3-6 supplement in my opinion.

Ditch the Vitamin Water- it's just sugar loaded water that is hindering you and not helping you- the Centrum will provide more than enough of the daily amount of Vitamins and minerals that you will need. No sense in drinking "Vitamin" Water if you are just going to excrete it through your urine either way. Plain Water always has been and always will be best.

I recommend training in intervals as if you just run at a continuous pace (or lift weights for that matter) for an extended period of time the body makes an adaptation to the condition and you get no benefit. To train with intervals you do a quick 5 minute warm up jog at a steady pace and then sprint as fast as you can for 30 seconds and then jog light for one minute- this is one interval. Train for as many intervals as you can and you will definitely develop more stamina as this style of training has aerobic and anaerobic benefits.

Hopefully this helps, and good luck to you in fitness and your career.
