    POPAT..Canada style!

Any advice regarding the POPAT and how to train for it? I trained once for it...by running, however, after doing the test it almost killed me and I am in pretty good shape. I should have trained for wind sprints as well as endurance....any suggestions from seasoned POPAT experts?

    Thanks!

In Alberta we call the POPAT the PARE, It stands for Physical Abilities Requirement Exam. The key to doing well in it is to know the course and choose the proper spots to take breathers. For most Law Enforcement Agencies in this province you will need to do it in under 4 mins, if you can't meet this requirement then the training you go through once you get in will kill you.

What sort of training and what sort of standards (run times, push-ups, chins, ect.) are you at right now?

Short duration, high intenstiy runs (achieve max HR for short periods of time) and if possible incorporate obstacles (benches, play structures, fences, whatever) and pushups during the run. It may look bizarre to other people so if your concerned about that, run at night. Just be careful of your footing.

The other thing to remember is that if you're not feeling almost dead then you didnt put your all into it. As far as the RCMP is concerned they want you to do your best everytime. So there is always room for improvement, and as you go through training they expect you to get faster.
