Just wondering how much tuna I can safely eat during the week. Right now I’m eating mostly tuna and grilled chicken and only drinking water. I’ve heard that tune has a high mercury level and your not supposed to eat a lot of it.

I hate Tuna, but due to some new dietary restrictions, I have been eating more of it. I would say my consumption is about once a week now.

I only eat 1-2 cans per week. Most ocean fish will have mercury in them - most freshwater fish are nearly mercury free. The thing about mercury is that it's linked to autism, so having tuna when you're pregnant, or young, isn't good at all. Of course, the knuckleheads in the vaccine industry used to put mercury in the vaccines, and we have thus seen a spike in the number of autistic Americans. If you're looking for lean protein sources, try turkey, ham, chicken, angus beef, beans and legumes.

Good info Oscars! I too rely more on turkey with the occasional tuna sandwhich, plus all that mayo on the tuna isnt good for ya either

Based off of the research that I was doing there was some pretty good information at a website called T-nation, which is a body building website (I'm not a body builder, just trying to get my diet in check), you should be pretty safe to eat a can a day.
As already mentioned it's the Mercury that causes problems. There is supposedly a supplement you can take to help block some of the Mercury released, or at least help regulate it.
If you want to take a pill that claims to block or regulate mercury, then go ahead and take it - I'm not gonna subject myself to that. I'd much rather cut my intake down to a can or two a week and use other viable, non-mercury sources of protein. To me, there's no point jeopardizing my longterm health for a can of tuna.Originally Posted by Neobamboom

I completely agree with you. However, it's not necessarily the lean protein that causes people to want to eat so much tuna. It's the Omega-3. Omega-3 has numerous health benefits including building lean muscle and fat loss, which is generally a primary reason for eating many sources of protein.
Though, I would rather just take a fish oil supplement rather than take the risk of getting mercury poisoning.

I would suggest filling in the difference with farm fresh eggs if you can find them. Free range eggs are lower in bad colesterol and carbs then store bought. You will not lose the Omgea-3 but gain in Betacarotins and vitamins.Originally Posted by BlueKnight901

Yeah, but eggs are high in fat and cholesterol.

Besides, it's better to get a few extra grams of fat from a healthy source like eggs than to get Mercury poisoning for the same amount of protein from tuna.
Unless you're preggers I don't think you need to worry too much about mercury poisoning.
Mercury is only found in the Albacore tuna - if it's Starkist, it's the the Solid White.
