Post Run to music, cadence or nothing...?

 Just wondering how many people find it easier to run to military cadence, than regular music. Or do you just zone out like I’ve heard some people do when running. I’m trying to work on my 1.5 mile time. I start the reserve academy in about 2-3 weeks and have a chance to go full time in October with the same department. I’ve already passed the push-ups / sit-ups and agility course, just trying to work on the run.

I’m 6’ 295…I’ve started back jogging my two miles a day and doing a heavy lifting routine. Last year I was doing this routine regularly and lost 22 pounds in 3 months. So far I’ve kept it off but I need to loose at least another 20-30 or more by October. And I have to quicken my pace on the 2 miles I’m doing a day….If your familiar with the standard speeds of most treadmills I’m jogging at about a 5.2 speed.:D

Well, for one, get off the treadmill. If you want to increase your speed, do sprints or speed drills. You're not going to run as far, but it will get you used to longer strides. That's the key - longer strides. If you have access to a 1/4 mile track, sprint on the straightaways, and jog (or walk) around the turns.

Also, dropping some tonnage would increase your speed. I'm a lot faster at 247 than I was at 291. Good luck!

Well, as a general rule I try not to do anything physical but in general I run better with cadence. Although if I'm not formation running then I like to just have some kick *** Rock music going...

Whenever I listen to cadence or just listen through my head, it motivates me because it reminds me of all the soldiers that I was sweating with and bleed with. I still remember the smell and the taste of sweats that we left in the field after we ran..So I choose military cadence.

When I run 2.5 miles I use my Ipod and crank up some rock to really get my pace up, however I train 3 times a week running a timed mile and a half. When I do that I dont run with anything so I can hear my breath sounds and keep track of what I am doing.

I honestly take the "train like you will fight" philosophy and don't listen to music when I run/work out.

Music won't be with me when I'm in a fight.

But in the movies there's always some cool rock playing in the background during a fight!

    It works

Well here lately I’ve tried running to military cadence and it has really helped me focus on keeping good time. I was also told that most all of the running in the academy is formation running so I need to go ahead and get used to it.

To get there I’ve got to make 1.5 miles in 15:25 and at the end of the academy I have to be able to run 3 miles. Not to bad, but I need work.

I run to whatever moves me that day. Currently that would be David Gray's Slow Motion. Some people, you know who you are, think his music is too slow to run to. I say they're just not listening.
