    Bench Press

I know one of the physical requirements for almost every agency I've looked into in Illinois is to be able to bench 96-99% of your own body weight. I was wondering how they administer this test: Is it the typical bench and free bar with the proper weights on it, or do they just use one of the machines where you put the pin in the desired weight? Thank you!

I would assume {Oh crap did I just assume something}that most agencies use the Nautilus machine. I would again THINK that its liability and they dont want people using free weights. I also think the machine is harder. Unless they would allow the machine to start in the upper position its definitely harder.

Baltimore County used a machine that started in the down position (for me, it was below the shoulders) with a plate stack. It was more of a torture device than anything. I had to do 261 and couldn't get it up - I max more than that with free weights. Failed. Be prepared.

What do you guys mean by the "down positon" at the gym i work out at their is a bench press machine that allows you to lay down as if you were utilizing free weights while there is another bench press machine that is where you are sitting and the handles are chest high...which one is it?

Think of a universal machine's bench press...it's a very awkward starting position.

Here in KY they use free weights. There is an instructor on both sides of the bar. They take the bar out of the rack and set it on your chest. Then you push it up from there.
