Sick for 2 weeks: PT help

    Hey everyone,

For the past two weeks I have been sick in one way or another. I had a sinus infection so I couldnt do anything that involved going up or down such as pushups and pullups without getting a debilitating migraine. Then recently I had a stomach virus so obviously I couldnt do much but watch TV. So basically I reverted to a lump on a log for two weeks and had no PT. Has this ever happened to any of you? Whats a good way to get back into the mix? Taking it slow? Anything in particular you reccommend? Also, if this has happened to you, did you notice a decline in your physical fitness, or was it too short of a time to make a difference? I just feel like Im wasting away and should be exercising or something . :D

    Thanks

happened to me in feb., once the medicine got rid of everything. I drank alot of water. That way before you start PT again your body has enough water.
Why is it that all these jerkoffs seem to know about the right to remain silent, but I have yet to find one of them to actually exercise that right. -Legoate

ya, good advice with the water. Ive lost a good 5 pounds and I assume alot, if not all was due to water-weight.

Happens to me - I've been out for a month now :S

Getting back into it this week.
    START SLOW
I'm an all or nothing guy - i can't help it. I eat really well and am active, but if one of those 2 is missing, they're both lost :(

Start with a jog outside or something, get back to eating right!
If you normally try to push out 6-8 reps, for the first week, I'd suggest just doing ten reps, then add weight back to where you were - within 2 weeks or so you should be right back on track where you left off.... i actually found that after taking a break/ forced or not - and you get a running start it helps.

But I'm by no means a big guy; maybe one of the yeti's on the board can chime in?

    sickness and training

happens to me alot! when I was dorming in college I used to get sick all the time and I am physically and mentally addicted to working out and keeping in shape! Believe me on this one, when you workout you put stress on your immune system and if your immune system is already weakened by a virus, it will just make you worse! Water is certainly good and make sure you keep up a strong diet. Glutamine supplements could also prevent any further muscle loss! But besides that, ride it out, and get back into it slowly. You'll know when the time is right for your body to endure the stresses of working out again

well today is the 2nd time Ive been to the gym since I was sick. My running hasnt changed, Im still where I used to be. I did notice that my pushups were lacking. But, hey, its alright. I take a multi-vitamin everyday and have been pushing OJ and other healthy foods. However, I am a college student and Pizza inevitably finds its way into my system. On occasion. :D

Thanks for the info though guys.

    muscle memory

well in essence, your body has "lost muscle" due to your inactivity and the strain of being sick. But, our bodies have a unique muscle memory system that allows you to gain back that strenght you once had in a short period of time. For instance, lets say it took you 3 years to bench 200 lbs. You get sick or don't go to the gym for lets say 2-3 weeks. When you do start going again, you will not be able to bench that 200lbs. However, it will only take you a couple of weeks to gain back that strenght instead of it being 3 years like it initially took you. Crazy how our body works!
