    Help with Dummy drag

We have to drag a 165lb dummy something like 15 yards. I can do it, but I'd like to shave off a couple of seconds off my time. I'm running 3-4 times a week during PT and I have been lifting 3-4 times a week, mostly upper body stuff. Any ideas on things I can do to improve my dummy drag time?

The dummy drag is 75% legs.. not upper body. Increase your squats.

You also need a proper grip for the dummy drag.

Go to the "Ask a Cop" forum and find a thread where the verifieds have been really "mean" to a troll. Try to email the poser before they get banned and ask them to allow you to drag them around as practice.

You can practice with a tire and do long sprints. Leg work would be most suitable. Lunges with weight will help as well.

I used my friends as "Drag Dummies" when I practiced. The two places I had to do the drag for allowed you to get a grip before they started the clock. I recommend squatting down, pushing your arms underneath the armpits of the dummy, gripping your wrists around the chest, standing up as tall as you can (to eliminate friction), and then lean back as you stride backwards. I did 15 yards in 5 seconds doing it this way and that was more then passing.

Good luck and do what works best for you.

I'm soon going to start doing an exercise that really works you out. A friend of mine is training to become a firefighter, and has a 50 lb. weighted vest. He puts on the vest and runs stairs at a parking garage on our college campus. Talk about killer!

Combine that with your squats/leg presses, and good core strength (abs/lower back) and I imagine you'll see a drop in your time.

    I'm 120 soaking wet...and our dept uses a 175 lb dummy.....and I did it. It's all in the legs!

I didn't practice for anything except running. I was determined to shave off some time on my 1.5 mile run, just to give myself some buffer. Everything else, including the dummy drag, was just done on the fly.

I think I had enough adrenaline going to compensate for any lack of strength. :D

    Mike is right...

Do everything he said. Especially leaning. Leaning helps to generate the momentum in moving the dummy. And remember its only for training. ITRW, you'd drag them by the vest and/or shirt...whichever is fastest. ;)

Thanks for the replies. I think I have the strength (still doing squats and leg presses), I just need to work on my technique. I feel like I'm going to fall backwards if I speed up. I think if I work on leg placement that will help a lot.
    Thanks
