Nassau County Police Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf killed by friendly fire

MTA cop who shot fellow cop Geoffrey Breitkopf in friendly fire incident said to be inconsolable

    See link above.

An MTA officer and Nassau county police officers responded to "man with knife" call. The MTA officer and Nassau officers followed the suspect into a home and subsequently shot and killed the suspect after he charged them with a knife.

Apparently, Special Operations Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf arrived after the subject had been shot. While Breitkopf was known to the Nassau police officers, the MTA officer was not aware he was a police officer. Additionally, someone yelled "gun" when Officer Breitkopf arrived as backup with a shotgun. The MTA officer mistook Officer Breitkopf for a suspect and shot him. Breitkopf died from those wounds.

The father of the MTA officer who shot Breitkopf was a Nassau detective who retired after 40 years' service.

Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf was 40 years old and leaves behind a wife and two young sons.

    Wow this is really sad.

My prayers go out to both Officers and their families.
