New South Wales (Au) police officer shot during a drug raid

A NSW (Aust) police officer has died after he was shot in the head during a drug raid last night.

The male officer was taking part in a search warrant relating to the sale of prohibited drugs when a number of shots were fired from an apartment block in Sydney just after 9pm.

The 26-year-old received gunshot wounds to the head and neck and suffered cardiac arrest at the scene, before being rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

He later died in hospital. . . his name hasn't been released as yet.

News just out that the bullet that killed Constable CREWS came from one of his colleagues.

It's not your fault, family tells cop who shot police officer Bill Crews | Perth Now

Now, the family of Constable William "Bill" Crews has demonstrated the same extraordinary bravery their son and brother possessed - publicly embracing the officer who fatally shot him.

Constable Crews' family met the officer at a wake for the slain policeman on Sunday and assured him they did not blame him for the death.

Prayers and thoughts sent to all Const CREWS's colleagues, especially the one who fired the shot. How do you live with that? I can't even imagine the pain.

Prayers for both the Sergeant and the Constable and the Constable's family. Very tragic.

Australia need felony murder rule. And death penalty.

By "felony murder rule" do you mean that if you commit a felony, and someone is killed, regardless of how or who did it, you are then charged with murder? For instance if A and B break into a house and the victim shoots A, then B is charged with murder? If so, I support that.

And just a half decent sentence would do for now, let alone the death penalty. The sentencing here is a joke. We need elected judges and magistrates so they are accountable for the disgraceful penalties they give out (if they give anything at all). Hardly any of them would make it to a second term. The public are sick of it.

Yes. In the U.S. there would be a lot of pressure on the prosecutor to charge the shooter with premeditated murder. It would have been as if he had shot the round that killed the officer. It's reasonable for the shooter to expect that his actions could cause the death of another person (shooting at people) and his felony did indeed result in the death of the police officer, so felony murder rule would allow a 1st degree murder charge. That's my understanding of it, anyway. In AZ, there's a list of felonies that get coupled with causing death and drug offenses are among them. In addition, theres a separate crime if a law enforcement officer is killed and the person intended to cause his death (shooting at him), and the officer dies as a result (even indirectly as in this case), it's 1st degree murder. My understanding of it, anyway.

I'm not familiar with Australia but the sentences I've seen in the "progressive" countries of western europe are pathetic. They are to the point where they may not extradite criminals to the U.S. if they could get life in a supermax prison because they consider it cruel.

In AZ, I think the shooter would be looking at an initial charge of 1st degree murder (don't know if it qualifies for capital murder but possibly). Even if he pleas it down from first degree murder (life imprisonment) he's probably still looking at 20-25 years for 2nd degree murder and additional time for drugs/assault etc. There are sentencing guidelines and requirements that have to be met by law. He would most likely spend the rest of his life behind bars and I would be disappointed in a prosecutor that settled for less.

Any jobs going in AZ for an Aussie cop?

    I like those laws.
