During the enforcement stop Officer Ortiz was struck from behind by an Infiniti being driven on the right shoulder of the freeway. As a result of the collision, Officer Ortiz sustained major injuries. We regret to report that Officer Ortiz succumbed to his injuries on June 22, 2010. Officer Ortiz’s death marks the 218th CHP officer killed in the line of duty since the Department’s inception in 1929.
The family and Department would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center for the care they provided to Officer Ortiz and the assistance to his family members and co-workers.
This tragic incident remains under investigation by the CHP.
